laugh at luck
    #3413675 - 11/26/04 09:54 PM (12 years, 15 days ago)

I have caught myself and others use the word luck or lucky a lot as of late and I wonder if this is self dellusion.

we have good luck and bad luck.

good luck obviously is when something goes our way as bad luck is the opposite.

narrowing it down, isn't luck then what happens, and whether or not its good or bad is up to our ego?

hmmm....I'm gonna go play some poker, hope I get lucky

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

i believe in luck a little, but mostly its how you deal with the life you have been dealt.

I say there's only attitude and out look and what you personally make of things.

If a bride in Chicago had it rain on her wedding day, she would feel befallen with "bad luck". However, in Hawaii, for it to rain on your wedding day is a HUGE blessing- major luck.

Some dudes flight gets cancelled and he thinks, 'what horrible luck". Waiting around for the next available flight, he meets the woman of his dreams in the air port bar and they get married. Ohhhhh so now it was 'good luck"

What about the dude whose alarm didn't go off because the power went out for a blip during a late night storm and he's late for work and thinks his luck is rotten. Then he gets there and finds out a plane rammed the building and blew it up. Now it was really good luck that his alarm didn't go off due to the storm.

Orrrr what if he goes in late and gets a write up and beleives it's bad luck, never knowing, coming in late spared him from a fatal car crash had he left on time?

What about the people who win multi million dollar lotteries and get divorced, piss through their dough in no time and end up raging alcoholics with serious mental issues?

I agree with you, Jiggy.  Perhaps it shouldn't be called luck. Things that happen can't be analyzed until years later.  How do we know that something that happens that gives the immediate appearance of being bad, isn't good?  And how do we know that something that gives the immediate appearance of being good, isn't bad?

I try to have patience when it appears that something bad is happening because it may turn out later that it was a good thing.

However, I was lucky on my drive to Utah on the day before Thanksgiving.  I put a few quarters into a slot machine at a casino where I stopped on  the way and I won $62 dollars.  I was so lucky!

This is a hard theory to put together with Free Will. Although I do think the two coincide. If there are infinite paths, but they all lead to the same destination, it's our choice to choose which path we'll take. Either way, we have a pre-determined free will.

I think our 'luck' is shaped by our Karma, past and present. When they say 'a real Man makes his own luck' I think that's very accurate. I have noticed myself in my life, a drastic change in circumstances and 'coincidences' when I take the path of 'service-to-others' rather than the selfish service-to-self.

I think we are given things in this life when we give ourselves, a sacrifice if you will. Is this not the essential teachings of all Religion and the entire symbolism behind Christ? Action:Reaction...good actions receive good reactions, bad actions recieve bad reactions. God only knows how to act out of Love and the act of giving...if we want to recieve from Others, first we must give Ourselves.

Jiggy you reminded me of a Taoist story I read recently, about a farmer whose horse ran away. That evening his neighbours gathered to commiserate with him about his 'bad luck'. The farmer said, "May be."

The next day the horse returned, bringing with it six wild horses, and the neighbours came to congradulate his good fortune. He said "May be." The following day his son tried to ride one of the wild horses got thrown off, and broke his leg. The neighbours came over to sympathise with the farmer for his misfortune. Again he said "May be."

The next day the conscription officers came to the town to seize young men for the army but because of the the farmer's son's broken leg he was rejected. When the neighbours returned to say how fortunately everything had turned out. How do you think he replied?

Best to keep in mind everything keeps evolving.
