So ive been out of the loop for awhile since i havent had a nice comp.. well i broke down and bought a nice one and i need to network so other ppl in the house can have cable too..

My question is my comp has xp and theres has win98.. and they have a lan card all i need to get a router and cable and thats all i need right? or do they have to have the same operating system?

And he slaughtered his own kind
He died a confused man
And killed himself in his own mind"

Not true at all. their are OSes that cant network at all and OSes that can network but not with each other. Dont fool this guy with a blanket statement thats not true

You will be able to set it up pretty easy. Anything windows is compatible, it just gets trickier earlier thatn 98...

You might need an xp setup disk for the 98 machine. And even if you don't have one, the process in starting a network includes an extra step for that disk

Well sharing an internet connection can be fairly easy. I've had win2k, winXP, mac os X and two different linux distro's on a network before. They could all share files except the linux boxes, but only because I did not try to. I never looked into sharing files on those computers.
