Lime Question
    #3412481 - 11/26/04 03:33 PM (12 years, 9 days ago)

I purchased some "Hi-Yield Agricultural Limestone". I'm doing a coco-coir casing, and was wondering if this was the proper stuff to use for ph regulation. Heres what the ingredients list:
Calcium (Ca): 21.6%
Magnesium (Mg): 13.03%
Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3): 53.94%
Magnesium Carbonate (MgCO3): 45.36%
Calcium Carbonate Equivalent(CaCO3): 109.03%

Yay or nay?

That points to a peat moss/verm mixture. He is using coir. I don't think coir needs a lime buffer.

it doesnt matter if you use peat or coir. The question is directly related to lime and that points directly to lime. FYI: You dont NEED to buffer coir, but it does help on later flushes.

Well I'm following the 60/40 Verm/Coco casing tek:
http://www.shroomery.com/index/par/23536
"You can also add some calcium carbonate (=crushed limestone) to this mixture(around 5% by volume) if you want to stabilize the pH of the casing mixture somewhat"
I was wondering if my Hi Yield would be an ok sub. for straigh up CaCO

If you read the link I sent you it's the exact same stuff he mentions that you are talking about. He also uses oyster shells. I wouldn't call it a substitute but it WILL help a lot. It will also help to add the oyster shells as well, but you can get away with out it.

Oh I read it -- I appreciate it too -- many thanks. I'll probably leave out the shells.

30 minutes should be enough from what I've been told..I used to do an hour and have done 30 minutes my last few batches with no problems.

I think I'm about to forget about the idea of using lime and shell...
cause the tek its suposed to be simple,
and there is so much scary discusion about PH
and answers more complicated than the questions.
The shroomery 50/50 tek asures calcium carboate is the safe way,
but there are contradictions in many posts about brands for pets and plants,

the point is

many Calcium carbonate brands (or lime) burn shrooms, thats the deal.

I think we all newbies need an expert to recomend a trustable brand, and maybe even a link ... something that will work 4 sure.

THANX!!
