?? vermiculite hazardous ??
    #3412025 - 11/26/04 11:33 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

When searching for vermiculite I found this:

" Vermiculite is hazardous material that contains asbestos. It is not worth the risk of using it. "

At "http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/3349.html "

Im gonna do some more searching! :frown:

that would be crazy. i dont think asbestos is allowed to be sold anymore. and if it was to be sold they would have a warning on the bag of verm. im righting it off as myth.

Me is being carefull with it from now on and will read a bit more bout the subject and whether the Dutch vermiculite contains asbestos....

It depends on the manufacture, but whoever makes it, what is in it is pretty much a fiberglass type material and should never be eaten. If you just have to trip off a cake either make it out of noodles, pour cranberry juice into it and drink that or get a good vacuum pump flask off of ebay with filter discs, some everclear and heat it up, suck it through and let it evaporate.

:noway: Somebody at cannabisculture.com smoked too much.  Got paranoid.

The verm. with asbestos-like stuff in it in the US came from one mine in Libby, Montana.  Mining stopped there almost 15 years ago (1990). It was big news... back then.

The vermiculite from there was used for insulation anyway, not horticultural grades.  Those of us who used verm. in the '80s and before probably got a lot more asbestos in us by going to school.

Yes, there are other similar minerals in various kinds of vermiculite, they are harmless.  They do not produce airborne asbestos fibers.  If you're still worried, just spray it with some water until moist and it it won't get in the air at all.

There is a ton of information online about it, as you have already seen.  There are also sites that still scream about it as if it's new news and the government/big business is selling us toxic waste or something.  Well, I'm sure they are, but not in this case.

I haven't run across anything official saying it was a problem in other countries, except when officials believe rumors instead of science.

Vermiculite and all other micas are structured like clay, not fiberglass, don't worry. Micas are also the stuff that makes cosmetics reflective or sparkly.

This is a good place to point out that you may be using a more hazardous silicate material though.  Perlite dust, as with all other silicate mineral dusts, can potentially cause health problems- and perlite is way more dusty than vermiculite.  Wear a dust mask if you are using it dry.  Even better, always moisten it with some water to avoid dust in the air when working with it.

And please don't start with peat moss- that was all from one incident where it was basically incubated with comtaminated pond water before shipping out, and has become another popular myth.  You won't get sporotrichosis or any other disease from the stuff you get in the stores!

Edit: Anno's link says it shorter and better.  I'm just leaving this up because for every post like this on forum boards, there are another 50 paranoid fantasies written.  I love that you all are using common sense and doing your homework.

In the 1970's a vermiculite mine owned by W. R. Grace in Montana was found to be contaminated with asbestos. Asbestos does cause cancer if inhaled, however, the contamination in the Montana mine was an isolated incident due to that particular mine's unique geology. Other vermiculite mines are free of asbestos and vermiculite itself does not contain asbestos. Today, all sources of vermiculite are carefully tested to make sure they're asbestos-free.

Read all about it at:
