Lack of Tyvek

My jars are filled and about to be PC'd, but I have no tyvek. I prepared my jars with the needle hole and ventilation hole, which I filtered with polyfill. The needle hole is covered by masking tape. With no way to get tyvek right now, should I just cover the jar tops with foil while I PC? I Don't know whether I shoudl leave it on (loosely) druing incubation for gas exchange. Also, when I shoot the jars should I just go through the tape and cover with a bandaid or pull back, shoot up, and replace my tape? Thanks for any help

The polyfil will serve as ventilation. You should cover them with foil but only to prevent water loss from the polyfil hole during the PC. Once PCed, remove the foil..peel back the tape..shoot in spores..stick the tape back down. The polyfil hole will provide all the gas exchange you'll need. You can also shoot through the tape and put new tape on or put polyfil in both holes and shoot through the polyfil or put one hole and shoot through the polyfil (works as a self helaing injection port). Whatevers clever.

Every tiny exposure to unfiltered air, increases the chance of a contam getting in. After jars are cool.
With polyfil in one hole, simply stick syringe needle right through tape on other hole, inject & tape (with sterile tape) over the existing tape. That minimizes external air exposure.

Tape is only removed on PF Tek jars, not grain jars which this person is using because they mention two holes and the use of tyvek which doesnt apply to the PF Tek. If you use grains you need to have all holes covered with either tyvek, polyfil, a bandaid, or tape. Prefered in that order by myself.

I have one grain jar with 1 hole filled with polyfill which I PC-ed all together. I inoculated through that polyfill hole.
No contams so far but colonisation could have been better. I used 1CC in the pint (3/4 pint popcorn) which where the last drops from a syringe I did not shake....
Any comments?

1cc is enough as long as there are spores in it. Make sure you shake the jar after about 25% colonization.

Just leave it alone now, it should recover in a day or two.

You could have made the hole not big enough..It should be at least an inch in diameter..more like 2 would be good. Stuffing it to tight can do the same..all in all that shouldnt be a huge issue..could be water content..who knows..way to many varibles in this hobby.

AN inch?? wow on the polyfill teks they use a screwdriver of less then half an inch. Which my hole (lol) is as well. And alufoil rather tight around it so maybe not enough for CO2 to get out! ?

I dont know for sure but tyvek stuffed in one little hole doesnt seem enough..are you sure the teks dont have 2 holes? The foil definatly isnt needed too and could certainly affect it. Foil is only needed during the PC then should be removed.
Me, I've never done polyfil on jars so I'm speaking a little from just theory. I use it on bags though with a hole about an inch in diameter. My jars have tyvek with two half inch screwdriver holes.

Yes sure bout one hole. On the nook I saw it even today. Dont know here my alufoil cover idea comes from maybe my own contam paranoia. I removed it today. The corn does not look real dry.
Next time Ill make 2 or 3 polyfill holes as a test.
You do the same with Karo, tyvek or breathing holes? Does KAro also need to get rid of the CO2? Obviously but one never knows.. :p

I do the same for my karo jars exactly, except with pints or 1/2 pints..I'm unsure of how much of an issue it is with karo..I doubt its very much of one. It would need to expell co2 of course..but I doubt much. Its just that with tyvek you can put as many holes as you want with the only effort being the stabbing motion with a screwdriver so still two.

Its a pain that Tyvek I can buy it here, but now I wanna do some growing instead of spending more money on the setup and stuff everyday. A tyvek Enevelope is between 1 and 2 Euro. Rather expensive.
But a kind person here said he will be sending me some soon!
Anyway I have made 2 small karo jars, one is closed the other one I just polyfilled the inoc hole.
