Thanksgiving!
    #3407723 - 11/25/04 10:41 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

Everyone has shit in their life from time to time, but no matter how shitty things get, don't ever forget that every one of us here is better off by far than the huge numbers of starving or oppressed human beings on Earth as evidenced by the fact that we all have a roof over hour head, food in the refrigerator, and money, leisure time, and freedom enough to sit around on our computer talking about such impractical things as S&P with our virtual friends online.

I *never* forget that; you shouldn't either.

Happy Thanksgiving, and the other holidays too for those who celebrate them!

Peace

I dunno what thanksgiving's all about (giving thanks maybe?), but christmas pisses me off. I'm gonna get an 8 foot high statue of scrooge if I can, and hang a big "Bah humbug" poster on my house.

THey should just have a day called "drunken family day" instead.

It's a secular (for me anyway) American tradition and holiday where we reflect on how fortunate we are compared to how bad things could be and are for many others.

It's one of our (America's) culture's better aspects.

nice, you look down on others you do not know to make yourself feel better about your ability to overconsume.

explain to me how celebrating other people's misfortune is a good thing.

Dood, you *totally* missed my point, made up one of your own, then stuck it in my mouth.

I'm grateful for all I have, and I recognize that there are people in the world who have far less than me. I never complain, even when bad things happen in my life, because I'm humbled by all I have even in the bad times, and I feel for those who aren't as fortunate.

And whenever I do feel like complaining, I remind myself that no matter how bad things get for me, I have no right to complain because my problems are trivial compared to many others' who perhaps DO have a right to complain, i.e. people who are hungry, or who suffer political persecution, imprisonment, torture, or people who are sick with no access to medical care.

That's the essence of Thanksgiving.

explain to me how celebrating other people's misfortune is a good thing.

Explain to me where I said I do, or ever have, celebrated other people's misfortune?

And while I'm at it, are you another puppet of someone without the courage, conviction, or truth to descent in his/her own name or are you really new here with only a handful of posts?

Eh? Which is it?  :poke:

let me break it down plain and simple:

thanksgiving: the ritual where you reflect and give thanks regarding the fact that you have attained a higher level of material wealth than others.

how is this ritual of reflection actualized? through over-consumption.

Dont you think thats a bit silly>?

we should be thankful that we have so much, while others have so little, so, in order to express this gratitude and meekness, we will eat lots of food.

So in order to submit to the fact that we are haves, whilst many have-nots exist, we will take full advantage of what being a "have" affords. GULP.

Yes, quite an honorable ritual that one is. The truth is, thanksgiving is all about guilt, and it has nothing to do with humility, if I wasnt correct, then instead of all the "haves" filling their bellies on this day of reflection, they would cook big meals for others who cannot afford to "give thanks".

some do.

Let ME break this down plain and simple:

Thanksgiving: the ritual where we express gratitude for our good fortune.

Let me know if you're still having trouble with that sentence. I can dummy it down for you a little more, but it will probably lose some entropy.

By the way, you avoided my question: ARE YOU NEW HERE, OR ARE YOU A COWARD USING A PUPPET? Which is it? :whack:
