Shaggy Mane??
    #3411526 - 11/26/04 10:53 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Found this nice specimen in bermuda grass yesterday in north georgia. The spore print is jet black and the cap is gilled. White stem with veil remnant and no apparent bruising color. The odor was not very prominent eother, so any thoughts?

it's not a shaggy mane, but definitely a coprinus.

looks kinda like C. atramentarius, but the ones I've seen up here tend to have darker caps.

DH

Panaeolus semiovatus?
I found this once the gills are packed
so tightly together they look solid

The easiest way to distinguish between them (for those who haven't seen both species) is that the Coprinus will deliquesce, and the Panaeolus won't.

The photo very much more resembles a Coprinus species than the Panaeolus.

Happy mushrooming!

the shiny cap and the look of the gills
makes me lean towards the Panaeolus.

The one I found was much whiter, otherwise
it was very similar to this mushroom.

I had thought it was Coprinus when
I first found it. It didn't deliquesce.

pretty sure it is corpinus, its much meatier than panaelus seems to be but that is my speculation. Thanks for the replies though guys, I dont have much experience with these mushrooms. This is the first corpinus i think ive found i just thought it was a nice liiking mushroom.

It's a Coprinus, that's for sure. I think DH was dead on with the ID.

BTW, I've never seen Shaggy Manes growing in GA. I think they're more of a northern species.

Yeah, it's definately atramentarius. They're up right now. I have one 5x5 foot area in my back yard that gets COVERED in them a few times a year. This past week the patch exploded with about 500+ fruits. I wasn't in a picture taking mood so I didn't get pictures of them. I did pick a bunch and I was going to cook them up and try them out but then some friends and I planned a party for Friday night... so eating Coprinus was out of the question.

It's a good thing I didn't eat them because I had my fair share of liquor  Would have been sicker than I already was. It was my first time drinking in about 3 months so my tolerance dropped down a LOT more than I had expected it to

Coprine, the substance that causes the alcohol intolerance, has also been shown to cause testicular damage in rats and dogs, so it is not recommended to eat C. atramentarius even if you don't drink alcohol.
