First time go!
    #3396372 - 11/22/04 11:35 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I'm beginning my first 4 jars of rye as of tonight. I have them soaking so far for 6.5 hours awaiting the next 5.5 or so. Then it's off to simmer, strain, rinse, PC! I'm just going to try cakes for now to see how well I can master my new hobby. I'll keep posted my problems, thoughts, pictures and questions. Hope all goes well! Wish me luck!

Keep us updated. Cakes are an awesome for the newcomer, lets you truely discover the life cycle of the fleshy fungus. Keep it simple the first go around so the variables are to a minimum.

I simmered them this morning early for 45 minutes and had to take them to a friends to get them PCed. I'm waiting on them to finish before I inoc (I'll be trying Ecuadorian straing first) and incubate. I know I still have a while, but what are some good methods to dunking and rolling the cakes before/after the first flush? If all goes well, which I am hoping it does, I want to make them as best as possible.

I prefer being able to get as much in the jar as possible without worrying about it being too full.

They are now inoculated and incubating as we speak. I am waiting for the spores to do their deeds. I don't have much for an incubation chamber at the moment as I am short of funds, so I have the jars wrapped in a blanket with a pillow on top of them sitting behind my fridge where it seems to be pretty warm all the time. I hope this works fine. Anyone have any other suggestions on how I could keep them warm without an incubation chamber or heater?

Did anyone actually read this post??

Hes making rye jars as cakes.

Im no expert, but rye is not a good caking substrate. Do your research on casing, you are using a casing material. Even if rye does make a cake, theres a reason why people arent doing it.

rye will work fine. However there is better, you should use multiple mediums and decide from your own observations what it is that you feel grows more vigorously. but you should aways find one that works best for you not others, unfortunately that happens through trial and error.

Sorry to inform you Kido, but rye does make a good cake substrate. It works in the same manner as it would for casings, just in a jar instead. I'll post my pictures when they begin to fruit. And then you can re-think your statement.

You may think that but there are teks on what he is stating. By heart: you put 120CC of water with 100CC of rye, in jar, in PC, cool, inoc, incub etc...
So it must work. Lot of people dont soak popcorn either they: PC popcorn 50 minutes, rinse drain, put in jars, PC jars 50 minutes, cool, inoc, incub, etc.

All with good results ofcourse.

EDIT: Idiot, how do you get that rye out of that jar in cakeform, or do you use the jar as a casing thus fruiting right out of your jars?

I'll be pulling straight from the jar to fruit the cakes on the jar lids. When the rye is fully colonized with mycelium they will come out just as easy as any other substrate. (This is all based on reading, help from friends) I'll just have to see how it works out with these jars and make any adjustments, if necessary, to my following jars. But I should have no problem pulling straight from the jars.

Also, I am using QT jars. And what is your proof to say that QT jars are any worse than a pintj, largosnook? It is all the same based on the fact that it is just more substrate, no other factors are changed. As long as all goes well with the incubation I shouldn't have any trouble removing the cakes from the jars to begin fruiting.

Yeah, they are wide mouth jars. I had some normal jars before, but my friend traded me his wide mouth for mine, because he only used them for PCing casing mix. So I was in luck there.
