i use wireless cable and i live in an apt so i have my choice of networks to use. normally i use them to d/l new files (afoaf recently had the cable company call him after he d/led a new-ish file and had him delete it while they were on the phone [que 1984 'conspiracys' ]) and browsing questionable sites. anyway whenever i go to a whatsmyip type sites it always comes back with the same ip and though it's not the right one i still want to have many diffrent options. i know the buildings all have diffrent service because they way the place is operated (people buy parts of buildings and lease them out so no central managent) so all/most of the networks are under diffrent names. what's the deal? how does the ip system work (keep it simpleton plz)? ty
-------------------- There's a thin line between sanity and insanity... and I just snorted it.
Each computer has a unique number assigned to it. There are internal ips and external ips. A network might have 1 external ip, but lots of internal ips. That way say 10 different people can be in a network and all can go outside the building, but they all go through 1 computer. When they connect to an external computer, it shows the 1 ip they all go through.
