Is there any way to tell if your grains are properly hydrated.. other than inoculating?

I just made up some wheat berry jars. Is there any way to tell if the moisture content is OK besides knocking them up and waiting to see how it goes?

I soaked for 24hrs and simmered for 30mins.. then let drain for about an hour, shaking frequently.

It looks a little dry to me, but I'm thinking my perception of what is "correct" may be a little off.

I think simmering is the best insurance that you can have. Did you wait til some of them started to burst? Cause thats a green light on hydration.

It should be OK then.
You could make a test and let a part of the batch simmer for another 5 minutes, then you will see if there is any difference.
