H2O2 concentration?
    #3406519 - 11/24/04 10:49 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I've read a lot about peroxide/water mixes here. Some examples;

10 parts water, one peroxide.
3 parts water, one peroxide.
A cap full.
A few glugs.

I've learned that the stuff is good for mycelium, and bad for spores. I've read that it's too strong when straight from the 3% bottle.

Does anyone here have the bottom line on this? At what point does peroxide stop helping and start hurting?

Thanks.

peroxide always harms mycelium. its just at the diluted rate of 10% it's not too harmful that it destroys mycelium. I believe 10% is the crossover rate.

That could be right, but it's not what I've read. When mycelium meets a low level of H2O2, it converts it to O2. Have a look at this. I've also read the mycelium make their own H2O2 when possible. It gives the fungus an advantage.

So, again; At what point does a good thing turn bad?

Thanks.

right, but we don't usually mix 10%. 10 parts water and 1 part h2o2 would be 11 parts, so 1/11 is approximately... 9.1%... times 3% h2o2... 0.27% actual peroxide in the mixture. enough to be helpful, but not enough to really damage the mycelium.

Right. I've noticed a lot of bad math about this. A lot of people are shooting for 10%, but some are using 9 to 1, and some 10 to 1. Some seem to be using 3 or 4 to 1.

Perhaps 50/50 would be a killer. 60/40 ? Where is the line?

of course i didnt mean 10% of straight h202, i meant 10% of 3% H2O2, which is what you said with the .27%. I wouldn't go past this mark. Sorry about the confusion.

oh, it's not just you that's confused, it's most of the board. they just spit out the 10% rhetoric because it's passed around here so much.

10 parts + 1 part = 11 parts. how do you get 10% out of 1/11th of the mix?

I never measure, I just try adding what i think is 10% of my 3% H2O2 solution to my water bottle. My water bottle is 16 oz, i try to add around 2 ounces by eye. The first measuring level is 4oz.

so 2 of 16 is 10%? 1/8 is not 1/10th. oh god, i'm the math police now.

as long as it's pretty diluted, i don't see a big difference.

I agree all this 1:10 ratio of 3% and calling it 10% blah blah is all very sloppy. Especially for a learning chemist DERX! 10% of 3% is 0.3% .. tut tut.

From my rudimentary BSC chemistry studies I know that.. I get 9% peroxide, when I dilute it 1cc in 2cc of water I have 3cc of 3%. If I then add another 3cc of water I have 6cc of 1.5%. another 12cc H20 gives .5%, Its really quite simple. For quick, simple measurements -Double the volume= half conc. Triple the vol= 1/3 conc.

I've used 1.5% (ACTUAL!) concentration in anything pre-fruiting stage with no noticable retardation of the growing process, dunking etc. For misting I dilute to about 0.5%, again, no noticable side effects, aborts or anything... yet.. unfortunately I am very limited to my experiments with a single strain.

ein volk,
ein reich,
ein concentration of H202 dammit!
