Early birthing with cold dunk and roll...
    #3406023 - 11/24/04 11:10 PM (12 years, 17 days ago)

I have some cakes that are SOOOOO close to full colonization.

I am growing very impatient and I am considering an early birth.

The cakes I plan on doing it to have an area on the bottom less than a half dime in size. I was going to just do the dunk and roll method of removing the top layer of vermiculite and then filling with water and a little H2O2.

My question is...how substantial is the contam risk with should a minute amount of uncolonized substrate? Or should I not even consider dunking these since there is uncolonized substrate? I was concerned that perhaps that uncolonized portion(that is VERY small) would allow too much water to enter the cake.

Any advice or suggestions are sincerely welcome.

Thanks!

Patience. I read somewhere that if you plan on birthing your cakes with any uncolonized substrate on them that you should scrape that area away because it is at high risk from contams. You dont want to give them ANY foothold with which they can then take over the whole cake. Also, It has been suggested to wait 2 or 3 days after the ouside of the cakes are fully visibly colonized before birthing them. This gives the myc time to colonize the inside of the cake as well. Hope this helps.
