Corts or Blewits?
    #3405908 - 11/24/04 10:39 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

It seems the unseasonably warm weather has extended mushroom season here.

I found these growing on the edge of my parents compost pile, right next to a spruce tree. I picked the big one for a spore print, but after six hours no spores.

This little guy was about two feet away. I'm 99% sure that they are the same species. Purple/brown Cortinarii are difficult to ID and are not edible so I did not try to ID them to species. They sure are easy on the eyes. It's supposed to snow here tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to get some shots of snow covered shrooms.

  :mushroom2:

They're blewits. Blewits love spruce
tree needles and compost.

I was hoping they were blewits when I first saw them. I've never found one before. Aren't the gills supposed to be purple on a blewit?
Last time I thought I found a blewit it turned out to be a Laccaria. This time I find blewits and misidentify them as Cortinarius?

I don't know. That bulb looks awfully cortish.

A white spore print will verify your ID, if I can get this thing to drop some spores.

Thanks for the reply falcon.

There does not appear to be any evidence of a cortina on the one I picked, but it's been raining and could have washed away. I'll have to check that little one tomorrow.

They look nothing like the blewits I've picked this season. Shrug.

When they are real young the gills are purple.
The whole mushroom as it ages turns tan, then
almost white.

With a cort that size you would expect to see
a cortina and the gills would become rust colored
as they age.

Blewits ussually have the bulbous base, which makes
them easy to confuse with corts.

I have thought corts are and laccaria are blewits
as early in the season as June! I like to eat blewits,
maybe to much.

Good find Shroomydan, try printing them outside in a
wax paper bag on aluminum foil.

Spore print is white!

I've found my first blewits. I can't wait to try them. Thanks for the help.

I see you knew how to tell for sure. The spore print color is definitive and obvious.

BTW, for official identification purposes, spore prints need to be done on white paper. If you do these on white paper they should come out a pale pinkish tan.

Happy mushrooming!

Excellent. Enjoy.

Blewits will continue to fruit
until you get a real hard freeze. Some years I've
found them as late as Christmas.

Motivates me to go out for a hike. We have been getting some pretty mild weather and like 4 straight days of rain.

Saw this one earlier this year, pic sucks though.. ruined the focus.

If you take a deep whiff you'll find that Blewits have a unmistakable perfumey smell. I find them disappointing though.. very bland with poor texture imo.

I tried some tonight and was not terribly impressed. It's always fun to try new kinds of mushrooms. They weren't bad; just like you said bland with poor texture. They would probably be better in gravy or soup or something like that.

BiO: do you dry yours before eating them? i find that while they don't have the best of textures, they are as good rehydrated as any other dried mushroom. since they keep well dried i usualy store them that way anyway.

i happen to like the flavor guite a bit.

i liken the smell they have when beginning to dry to fruit loops cereal.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

they smell like citrus to me.

I like them with other mushrooms.
They go well with hen of the woods
and portabellas.

try doing a dry saute with the blewits. if you saute them dry on med-high heat with a pinch of salt until they loose their water then add some olive oil and saute for another 5-10 minutes, they have a decent texture, and okay flavor (still somewhat bland).

I think I found the same thing but didn't think it was L. nuda because it showed no purple coloration. I wasn't aware of the fact that they lost that coloration when they grew older.

Here's a pic of what I found(they are a bit waterlogged):

I've only tried Blewits fresh. They grow absolutely EVERYWHERE round here and I normaly just ignore them. I'll try drying some in a few days as they're still popping up even after the recent snow we've had.

they tend to loose it mostly from drying [or starting to then getting moist again]. from the look of that, it seems to be a clitocybe.

blewits tend to be near impossible to id once the purple is gone. the only times i tend to trust faded blewits is when they are in a ring of others showing clear color. even this isn't copmpletely safe so i wouldn't recomend it to others.
