misting shroomies
    #3405790 - 11/24/04 10:07 PM (12 years, 16 days ago)

Why does it supposedly damage the mycelium if the cakes get any water droplets on them? If I spray the cakes from above and let the mist fall gently will that be okay?

Small droplets wont hurt the myc. Theres lots of dew in the wild isnt there? In the nice humid places where mushrooms like to grow. Mist above and let it fall on the casing

What is it then when I've read about sealing a casing with mist?  I've been hesitant to mist a casing because of this--I thought it would prevent the myc from colonizing the surface.  Can someone explain this briefly?  Many thanks.

Is it true that water droplets cause aborts? If so, why? As scatman said there is dew in the wild, so whats wrong with it inside?

misting DIRECTLY will cause the droplets to hit the myc and pins at an accellerated rate, damaging their fragile little structures.

misting above and letting it fall defeats this, especially if you use a good hand pumping sprayer.

even with an ultrasonic, occasional mistings on casings must be done. an ultrasonic doesn't fix everything my friend. they also take a bit of getting used to (get the settings just right so you don't drown anything).

Zero, the better mister is the pump up style as opposed to the hand pump.

The green one is the pump up style and will produce a much finer mist then even the good hand pump yellow one there. The yellow one is good for freshly fruited casings though.

Sealing a casing will happen only if you turn the casing to mud. Its like if you take some sand and spread it out..if you mist it lightly many times you can keep it moist but light and airey..but if you spray it down until theres a puddle it will turn to mud and when it dries it will be a mud patty instead of light and airey. If you turn your casing to mudd it will cause it to seal. Large drops of water as you mist directly (especially to close where the water pressure actually affects the casing) can cause this to happen but small drops of water falling on it wont.

In nature there is dew but they do grow under trees out of direct heavy rain. If you soak aborts they'll drown and abort so you don't spray them directly..let the water fall on them as well..hope this helps.
