Lids or no lids on regular quart jars.
    #3405494 - 11/24/04 08:46 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have regular (non wide mouthed) ball quart jars. Should I use the disc or will I be ok with just a tyvek filter?

I've always heard to use both the lid and the tyvek.

Afoaf put one hole in the center of the lid (~ 1/4 inch for breathing) and another one near the side of the lid (big enough for a needle to fit through). He puts the lid on, then the tyvek, then the ring, then foil.

The jars can dry out using only the tyvek filter since it allows water vapor to pass. It can be done without the lid however its easier, especially for a beginner to stick with using the lid.

i'm going to try using the tyvek without the lid. i will cover the top of my jars with aluminum foil. it seems like it would work.

I poked 5 small 1/8" holes in the lid. One in the center and one at the end of an "X". I bent back down the sharp edges from the nail pokin through. I put the tyvek on, then the lid, then the ring. I covered that with foil, put a small slit in the foil, then put in the PC. Sound aight?
