keeping the mycelium jars with my iguana
    #3405372 - 11/24/04 08:20 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

im growing my mushrooms in my bathroom and my lizard lives in there too. im keeping the jars where he sleeps cause theres a good consistent temperature, but i was just wondering if that could be hazardous to his health?

and i doubt this will happen, but if for whatever reason he gets into the fungus while their fruiting, if he were to eat a good amount, could it kill him?

It wouldn't kill him physically, but it would murder his mind. No animal his size could mentally recover from a traumatic event like that. Not to mention that lizards can be unstable anyways. Plus they are not the cleanest animals around. There will be much more nastyness in the air in that tank than outside of it. Don't try to use this tank for two things. It will compromise your animal as well as your grow. Buy something seperate, with it's own heating pad.

rabbits eat cubes/things like that and don't even feel effects. i don't know about an iguana. but his cage is nasty. Its humid, filled with his urine and such.. and generaly speaking you also have some rotting veg/fruits in there too. Not a good place. TiT costs 30$ or less and is a damn good investment.

Yes it is. Two tubs from Walmart or Target = $7-10 / 1 submergable fish tank heater = $15 at most / Water = free / and you have yourself a TIT.

sorry i shouldnt have even bothered with that last question, it took everyone off topic. he doesn live in a tank or a cage, i made a few platforms in my bathroom and he spends most of his time at the top on the window cill. but im keeping the inoculated jars on second level where he sleeps, i was wondering if keeping the mycelium around him would be bad for his health, if it was toxic...?

as for when they start to fruit ill be keeping the mushies in a rubbermaid or some sealed off aquarium, i was just curious if he somehow got into them what would happen (but therell be a .001 % chance of that happening).

thanks

Its not toxic but the room that the jars are in should be sterile, contams can easily get in. Reptiles are often covered with bacteria. If you continue to colonize jars there you will quite likly be wiped out with bacterias.

its the best place in my house to keep them, without my my dad taking notice. i keep the room moderately clean and the iguana gets a shower every few days, i guess this is gonna motivate me to keep the room sterile as a doctors office.

thanks scatmanrav

any cleaning supplies u guys could reccomend?

No because I am unsure of what ones would be safe for the iguana. Alcohol would dry up quickly so I would recommend that. H202 would be safe but fairly usless. I'm unsure..good luck though..

Iguanas and most reptiles have tested positive for salmonella (sp?). Tests have shown 70% of all iguana urine (water really) contains the bacteria. This being said I have an iguana and have had all the same urges to fruit my cakes with him in there. if you do decide to do this, even though its not sterile, you have to b careful because ur iguana WILL eat them and you dont know how the active chemicals affect his/her brain and body. Nothing sadder than a dead iguana (although a trippin one would be great lol)
