Shall I heat my PMP?
    #3404040 - 11/24/04 03:56 PM (12 years, 18 days ago)

Hello folks

Sooner or later I will have some colonized cakes or casings ready for the pmp. I bought an aquarium heater buttttt I was wondering if I really need it. If not then I can make another TiT!

The temps in my house are between min 62 (nights) and max 70 (daytime).

Heat it or not?

Eh, my growing room stays about 68. I don't heat my fruiting chamber, even though I do have the aquarium heater.. I just use it to heat other incubation chambers.

The fruiting chamber stays around 69 to 70 degrees according to my thermometer. So you should be ok, just try to keep the heater on a little warmer than 62 I'd say.. maybe aim for 65 at night.

Heat it. I set up my PMP about 2-3 weeks ago and went through the same dilema. I had one cake done 1 week before the others so I put it in there without any additional heat other than a light source for 12 hours. With light on the temp was around 70, off it was around 60. 1 week later I got a heating pad and put 3 more cakes in. Those 3 are doing much better than the first did in it's one week alone. They are fluffier, growing faster and I think are better off. That's my experience atleast.

Yeah, and for whatever reason I found when it was unheated, my PMP was around 5 degrees cooler than my thermostat was set at. I am using an airstone for air flow though, that may be why. But if you're the same then you may drop below 60 on nights if unheated.   I'm using a 20 gal tank heating pad for reptiles. It doesn't get hot enough to melt plastic but has kept the perlite around 75 and the air around 68-70 consistently.

My PMP is about 120 liter, dont know in gallons but if the air outside is 62 then inside it wont drop below 60 I presume?

Ill be heating it with a 75 liter aquarium heater (it heats 75 liter to a max of 32C about 90F). There will be about 15-20 liters in it which must be kept at about 70-75F so I think my heater will handle that.

BUt indeed the 62F air blowing in could be a pain, just raise the temp of my heater then.

WIll test setup this weekend!

Thanks m8 4 sharing ur thing.

IME to cool is better then to hot, within reason. I'd rather have 70 then 80 and its easier to go over when using a heater. The cakes and casings will generate some heat along with any light plus where you set it will affect what the temp is inside. See how they grow and if you have problems switch lower but really low 70's is great..keeps vegatative growth to a minimal and induces fruiting. Seems to grow bigger thicker shrooms as well though they do grow a little slower.

I agree Scatman, also some dutch growers told me better not fruit above 70 which is about ideal temp soem say.
Higher temps will also break down potency faster...
But my house at day time gets 20C / 68F. At night 17C / 62,6F. I dont want to change my house temps, so I wanna help the temp inside my PMP slightly.
I will see what will happen.

If you do decide to heat your PMP I suggest using a fish tank heater. Get one, and if you can get a couple matching tubs, Fill one with water and the heater, then create an incubator by placing the other tub inside the first. Have a towel on the bottom of Tub 2 and place your jars inside. I think 86*F is perfect for growing.

Yes dear Godess! Thats what I have, a TIT! Tub in tub incubator. Now I  wondered what to do with my other heater (fishtank), put in my PMP or build another TIT!
2 tits rule imho...

Anyway I think I will stick one in my PMP though, which is my fruiting chamber which should be about 70, which my house is not many hours during the day.
