Music Theory Scholars: Please assist me

Do you have any idea how to tune my 6-string acoustic guitar to this tuning: http://www.rev.net/~aloe/music/golden.html

I don't understand the music theory on the webpage, and would basically like to know which note I should tune each string to.

If you can help, thanks.

P.s. If this tuning requires a fret-board modification (similar to http://www.lucytune.com/guitars_and_frets/frets.html)) I do not mind.

Ohhh snap...

I've been looking for something like this for a long time!!
Golden Mean tuning... amazing.

I'll try to attack this more after break, but you first need a tuner that will recognize and change frequencies. Then you go from there...

Thank you thank you!

My guess would be you would need fretboard modification to do anything but play this on an open strings. Because, playing, say on the fifth fret raises the pitch by a specified amount, and a fifth is different in this alternate tuning, the fretboard would need to be modified so that the pitch is raised by a slightly different amount.

Just as far as the bottom two strings go, E and A. The E is 5 half steps away from the A, such that the fifth fret on the E string sounds the same as the open A string. However, by changing the intonation of the strings to this, the A on the A string would sound slightly different then the A on the fifth fret of the E string (the A on the E string would be sharp by 5.741 cents). So, to compensate, you would have to adjust the fifth fret.

You'd be better off getting a software synth that can preload these alternate tunings and doing it on a keyboard, or getting a fretless instrument and going that route.

I would think you'd need a fretless instrument to play something like this because you can change the pitch in very small incraments without changing the note.

I never knew music could be so mathematical. The two languages of the universe.

For some 'musical' reason, I want to attempt this on a guitar (perhaps I just love the acoustic guitar sound). Fret modification does not seem all that difficult... . The second link I provided gives directions/methods of changing a guitar fret board to have a tuning which seems to be in accordance to the Pi ratio (not the Phi, as golden mean tuning is). The link didn't work, but I have now fixed it.

I think fret modification would be quite different... You'd have to gauge pitch and length of the string, to account for half steps and stuff.

I'm going to try and make a tuning preset in a VST or in Cubase. hmmm will be tough
