Help me build my computer.
    #3399379 - 11/23/04 04:15 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I'm doing this in a rush and have almost NO time to research the best parts and such. I usualy read a lot into it before buying.  I'm building this for a friend.
Ok, this PC will be used mainly to watch movies, write dvds, etc.  Graphics should be ok, but not the most important.
Multitasking is important, but dont talk about multiprocessors, we just cant afford it.

Using onlineconversion.com, at todays rate, i have $800 CAD to spend on this system. Thats $674 US Dollars.
My main sources for parts will be from these 2 local canadian vendors:  www.icct.ca  and www.pcvillagecanada.com
The reason i HATE ordering from online is due to cost of shipping/taxes/random customs charges that apply from companies shipping to canada from the US. (in other words, please dont tell me to visit newegg or anything like that... unless they have a REALLY good deal.)

I need the most help with the CPU and Motherboard combo.
It has to be AMD btw.  I already know that the Athlon 64 is probably the best choice, but there are ones with different numbers of pins and i have no idea what the difference is.

He wants a 160GB HD, and a DVD writer.  I'm probably gonna get an LG CD/DVD 8X RW GSA -4082B OEM to take care of the DVD writing needs.  I've put it in 2 systems already seems to work ok.  And its cheep.

For graphics, is there is enough cash left over, i'm probably gonna go with the best Radeon i can get.  I'm an ATI fan, what can i say.  The R9600 Pro seems to OC very nice.

Anyway, the most help i need with is the CPU and MOBO combo, and maybe a recommendation in RAM.

$700 US is not a lot to work with. This is only for the box btw.
Monitor and other external crap is separate.

Thanx dudes.

take an Athlon64 3000 with winchester core (0.09 micron technology)and an MSI K8N Neo2, get some good ram (2x512Mb) and you're done!

Be careful with 90nm/.09 micron CPUs, as sometimes the motherboard won't work with it unless the BIOS is updated. You need a working CPU on the board in order to flash the BIOS. You can also get 130nm CPUs for socket 939, which will run at the same speed but use more power than their 90nm counterparts.

Thanks guys.

Couple of Q's.

Is the 130 NM CPU (at the same speed) cheaper than the smaller 90 micron?  Other than heat/electric issues, any other reason the 90 NM is better?
Also, really important, would they BOTH fit into the SAME mobo? (same number of pins?)

Edit: lol. ok, nevermind. I just checked the prices on 939 CPUs, and the cheapest one is way above my budget.  Any good CPU/mobo recommendations for a 754pin Athlon 64?

Do not go AMD 64 if you have only $674 to spend.

Also a lot of today's software still isn't up to 64 bit technology, I myself am going to wait atleast a year before building a 64 system.

I would go with something like

Asus A7N8X Motherboard - $75
AMD XP 3000 - $110
2x512mb Corsair PC3200 - $150
RADEON 9800 Pro 128MB - $135
250GB SATA drive - $150

All that comes out to $620 so if you cut a few corners, use some of your own parts and maybe downgrade something a little you can make your budget.

$675 isn't much to work with these days, computerwise.

Thanks for that suggestion/build.

The trade off is the CPU with your build.  I either go with fast/efficient CPU/mobo combo, and leave the other parts cheap, or go with the 'old school' AMD and make all the other parts better.

Remember that this guy will mainly use it for multitasking and movies.  That means he wants to burn DVDs while he's surfing the net and doing whatever else at the same time.  Thats pretty much the only reason i wanted to go with the AMD 64.  Oh btw. It'll probably be running in 32 bit mode anyway... but from what i've read, its still faster than the XP in 32 mode.

I dunno.  If this was my system i'd probably go with your build, but with this guy who knows.

Oh btw!  I found this cool canadian site with a PC builder that has prices similar to what i can get local.
The dude said he's willing to spend about $870 canadian now.

I'd suggest getting the AMD 3000+ 939 90nm cpu. With a decent heatsink you can overclock it to 3500+ level. It's the best bang for your buck right now.

Get either the Abit AV8 or the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. As far as memory goes, you'll need some decent memory if you are going to overclock, if not just get regular generic CAS 2.

If you don't plan on gaming you don't have to worry too much about the video card. Just get something decent.
