So I am pretty sure this is the laptop I have decided on

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshiba-S...roductDetail.do

I went in and saw it at circuit city and creamed my panties.
It doesn't seem to get too hot, its display is gorgeous. The specs are arousing. It will probably be 7 - 8 lb.s, but I am going to have to deal with weight if I want the kind of performance I expect. Also has hyperthreading technology. It isnt the MOST attractive laptop, but aesthetics is the first thing I will compromise so I can get what I want. This machine is going to have more power then my desktop, and I will get a lot of use out of it considering how much I lug my desktop around with me to different places. I am probably going to turn this desktop into a Gentoo box, get it all sexified, and run apache, an ftp server, set up a nice firewall on it (versus running this shit firewall on my D-link router) and may be run squid on it to block my moms access to the shroomery website off (gotta be extra careful).
I also have faith in toshiba. Tell me what you guys think.

you should get a powerbook instead, except a comparable system would run you about $2.5k.... its so worth it though!

"A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

I had a roommate with a Toshiba laptop, he had some terrible things to say about their customer service. Might have been an isolated incident though.

That's a pretty decent laptop I think. Personally, I think HP has a good line of laptops right now. I like the fact that you can turn off the scroll pad so it doesn't fuck with you while you're typing. Also, they have the widescreen models like that Toshiba. Mine is a Compaq X1360US (made by HP) with widescreen (can't remember the size, but everyone who sees it comments on what an excellent screen it is). I've loved this laptop.

Oh, and it will run you about the same price for the same or better specs.

I was actually just talking to matts about this the other day since he's getting a new laptop too. The Toshiba you're looking at sounds pretty sweet but I really would go with a Pentium M in a portable. They can be a little more expensive but I think the extra battery life is worth it. Anyway if it were me I'd probably go with the Inspiron 9200 or 700m if I wanted something more portable. Toshiba, Sony and Acer also make some pretty nice Pentium M laptops. I'd at least check them out.

Peace,

-Y
