Botton of Bag is a little dry
    #3401042 - 11/23/04 10:16 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I just noticed that a very small layer on the bottom of my mycobag is dry and crunchy. Its very small though, less than 1/16 of an inch. So, I raised the bag further about the heat source. Everything else is warm and moist. No myc is growing yet, but when I went to check the bottom of the bag some of the got moved around and shook up. Is any of this really threatening?

how hot is it getting in your incubator? it shouldn't be drying anything out. just warming it to encourage colonization. what % of it colonized? i would crumble up the substrate, w/in the bag, to help distribute some moisture to that area.

None of its colonized yet. I just inoculated 3 days ago. Well, right now its a box with a simple heating pad. I had a towel ontop of the heating pad to prevent burning. I just put another towel ontop of that one. I dont know if I should crumble anything up yet.

yeah i wouldn't crumble anything yet. i'd would reccomend getting a better incubastor or just let it colonize without an incubator. i'd say it's better to let it colonize a little slower in lower temps then to put it in a dangerously warm envirnment. the fact that it's already starting to dry out after 3 days of incubation tells you it's a little too warm in there. though this is just my belief, you may wanna wait for another person to chime in. a good incubator to use is 'the tub-in-tub incubator', using a submergable fishtank heater. very easy to use and not too expensive. a fishtank heater will only run you about 15- 20 bucks....nothing heavy.

good luck

Yea, that makes sense. But, Its barely anything that got dry, and that was because it pretty close to that very hot surface. Im going to turn it down now. Everything else is very moist and looks good. I just hope I see some growth soon.
