Sporeworks: Luminescent Pan stipticus prints, Pan cyan syringes, more!
    #3398762 - 11/23/04 04:06 PM (12 years, 18 days ago)

Howdie folks!

This is just a quick little note to let ya'll know about some updates at Sporeworks.com.

We now have the luminescent Panellus stipticus available in spore print microscopy kits! This is a great little mushroom to culture and cultivate and now you can get source material in dried spore form! There are a limited number of these prints available, and more may not be had until spring, so grab your's now so you can play around with some glowing fungi this winter!

Panellus stipticus fruiting outdoors on Wood Based MycoBag(TM).

We have also added Hypholoma capnoides, the smokey gilled woodlover, to our edible mushroom spores for microscopy lineup. Preliminary cultivation work and culture generation work is underway, but for now we have dried spore print samples available. Opinions vary on the choiceness of this edible species. David Arora states "thin-fleshed and not particularly tasty". At the other end of the scale, Paul Stamets says "nutty and excellent in stir-fries."

We have also returned Paneaolus cyanescens spore syringe microscopy kits back to our spore lineup. These have been out of stock for several months now and we know many of you have been waiting for these to return. Currently we are offering the Australian strain but have plans to add more strains to spore syringe availablility in the near future.

As always we want to thank you for your continued patronage and support and we welcome your feedback and suggestions.

Hehe, it's a naturally occuring fungi, so we can't take credit for it . But we do have it available in spore print form and culture syringes so it's pretty easy for people to work with and cultivate on their own. It's a nifty little mushroom and it's always neat to have some glowing mycelium on hand to impress the ladies (and menfolk).

The images on our site were generously donated by b+elladonna. They were taken on 100ASA film with Nikon F90X, 28mm lens at 3.5 aperture. Exposure time was approximately 20 minutes in complete darkness. A 20 minute exposure in total darkness picked up the bio-luminescences nicely, but they won't appear to glow that brightly to the naked eye. The glow is almost like a faint green and is mostly noticeable only after you allow your eyes a few minutes to adjust to the darkness of a well blacked out room. Panellus stipticus is still a VERY fun mushroom to mess around with, both in mycelium form (like these image) and eventually when it fruits.

I decided to do a little reasearch on bioluminescent fungi and found lots of interesting information.
I found these Panellus pics at http://www.bioart.co.uk/lux/panellus.html

I believe I've seen this in wisconsin. There was a tree stump some kids were kicking, because when they did, it would glow green. I assume new mycellium was just being exposed. Could've been another fungi, but it was certainly glowing green.
