How heavy is CO2???
    #3397540 - 11/23/04 09:08 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

From what I've read growers say that CO2 produced by mushroom growth tends to settle near the casing surface because CO2 is heavier than O2. My question is, in totally stagnant air, will CO2 completely separate forming its own layer and settle at the bottom? My concern is that I have one cool mist humidifier hooked upto four 90L bulk grow bins, and with four hoses hooked up to the cool mist the overall blow speed of the mist is greatly reduced. Would I still be able to achieve effective air exchange in this situation?

yes it does form such a layer.
i guess it would be a good idea to fan from time to time.

No, it does not form such a layer.

While it is true that it is heavier as air, it is constantly mixed with the air by(at least 2 ) mechanisms:
- diffusion
- convection through currents in the fruiting chamber induced by the temperature gradient between the casing surface and the air.

So, while there might be certain concentration differences from top to bottom of the fruiting chamber, there is no sharp "layer" of CO2.

ok but theoretically such a layer forms in stagnant air.
even though the o2 is mixed with the air by the mechanisms you've mentioned, i think regular fanning would be good, since the air is exchangeing quite slow.

Oh, definitely, active air exchange is important, no doubt.
I was only disputing the layer theory.

anno: the co2 is still MUCH more concentrated at the bottom them at the tippity top correct?

I agree 100% with Anno. It seems people here get hung up on this way too much. Sure, CO2 is heavier than air, but they're both gasses. We're not talking about oil and water here. They will only seperate to form layers like that in a 100% stagnant environment. Even the slightest air currents will cause carbon dioxide and oxygen to intermingle.

So guys, by what you guys are saying, isn't the slightest stream of fresh cool mist air sufficient for air exchange?
