bulk substrate material
    #3397655 - 11/23/04 11:48 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

trying to start a blk grow and had a few questions about the substrate, like does hay work like straw, or is it pretty much only straw. theres an animal feed store with alfalpha and timothy grass hay and it looked good, but it doesnt sound right. also i found some humus(composte) with 10% maure and i was wondering if that would work ok/better than a maure, straw or a mix. and yes ive read the teks, but i didnt know the best.

agreed...I like to shredd the straw in a blender(or food processor)...this way you can fit much more in a given space so you get more nutes, MUCH faster colonization because the straw is all touchin and because you can mix in the spawn MUCH more evenly...I also grind up the horse poo I use and add 1/2 verm...the verm bulks up the depth of the casing and also provides the mycelium all the water it needs to produce nice healthy big mushrooms...also millet is most nutritious substrate you can use...so using it as spawn also boosts the nute content of your bulk grow...which means better flushes and more of them

I have not tried timothy cob hay...but what I've read is that it contams easier than wheat straw...I've only ever used wheat straw...animal feed stores should have it...you can also get white millet at all the feed shops round here...no clue on humus..I use leeched and dried horse poo right from a farm

Well bulk need straw hay can be bad. Alder shavings, peatmoss, vermiculite, worm casing, straw, and distilled water are all that are needed for some good quick home compost. Manure is harder for my friend to get working in bulk so he used worm casings and they worked great.
