Filter Disc Question for you vendors
    #338054 - 06/11/01 02:05 AM (22 years, 9 months ago)

I was looking to buy these filter discs and had a few questions. I measured my jars and shit, they measure to about 80mm! I am looking to buy plastic autoclavable lids because my metal ones are rusting. I think theses would be a good investement to any mushroom grower. I noticed that all you offer 70mm filter discs. Would that fit my jars. I am using Ball and Kerr canning jars. Wide Mouth 1/2 pint and 1 quart regular mouth. The two different jars have the same diameter opening. Could you possibly tell me what size they are? Could you also tell me where I could purchase plastic lids and filter discs which would fit my jars. Thanks in advance!

Are these filter discs supposed to fit in place of the metal canning lid (inside the metal ring) or are they supposed to fit under the lids (under the 1/4" or 1" hole that i drill) ?

Autoclavable Lids for Spawn Jars
These one-piece lids are superior to metal canning lids for spawn production in that they will not rust or warp. A 3/8 inch diameter hole should be drilled or melted through each lid (boiling the lids for a minute or so before drilling will help keep them from cracking) and a Synthetic Filter Disc inserted underneath to allow contaminant-free air exchange. Color: various.
For Regular-Mouth Canning Jars (70mm opening)
Sets of 10 LQM70/10 $6.95
Sets of 100 LQM70/100 $49.95
For 1/2 Gallon and 1 Gallon Jars (110mm opening)
Sets of 10 LQM110/10 $7.95
Sets of 100 LQM110/100 $59.95

I have no idea how large my lids are. I measured 80mm. Where do I measure from?

You can get plastic one piece lids from your local wal-mart.  Either in the aisle with the canning jars, or the aisle with zip lock bags and tin foil.  The majority of other grocery stores will carry these as well.

The plastic one piece lids from walmart or any other place that sells canning jars do work, I have pressure cooked them many times at 70min 15psi, and they never bend, warp, or melt, they cost $2.00 for eight of them.

SLither -

The plastic lids... I read on the package and it says its for freezing or refridgeration... not for food processing. Is that true? I am afraid they will melt.

Aren't these filter discs just laboratory filter papers? e.g. Whatman #6 (3 micron) filter.

They will not melt, I promise you, I have some I've used about 10 times now at 15psi for 60-75 min each time. It says on the pack not for processing, but that is just because they don't seal airtight. You have to drill at 3/8" to 1/2" hole in the center, you need to get them kinda hot first or they will crack, I use a dremel, and the bit gets it hot enough.

A bit dated but....

The 70mm, 90mm etc....those are rough sizes.

Myco Supply is having them made and the sizes that fit canning jars aren't as easy as 70,90 etc :)

I have to admit the Micron Magic Discs look neat! I'd like to use some of those for the REALLY big jars:)
