Skinny Pins
    #3395370 - 11/22/04 09:47 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Any suggestions on what I can try to 'fatten' these up? There's a ton of pins forming, but they are all skinny. I'm including a pic for a reference.

lol, thanks!!
Ok, but I'm curious. Sometimes I see huge fruits here on the site. Mine are more turning out as tons of smaller fruits, but none of them grow very thick. What causes that? Is it the way the pinning was initiated? (more pins = skinnier fruits? less pins = fatter fruits?)

Well i would assume the fewer the pins the greater the nutrients hence larger fruits, I saw the pinset on your previous post. You'll be in for a good flush and i wouldn't be surprised to see some decent size fruits. GL to ya

Pins like that are caused by one of three things in my experience.

1- Strain.........Shrooms that come from the equator have MYC that grows very fast and dense but have skinny fruits. It is a survial thing due to the extreme temps. Shrooms from more mild climates have less dense MYC and huge fast growing fruits

2- Lack of a good air exchange...........Keep the air changed

3- Low water in the cakes

But mostly it is from Strains

Great info, thanks!
I'll try keeping more air flow going. There's definately plenty of moisture/humidity.

Yes This true is the sense that with more shrooms growing from a cake the less water is made avaiable to all the pins.

I once did a experiment by pulling 50% of the pins on a cake to see if it made bigger shrooms. LOL I ended up with 50% less shrooms from that flush. I think the MYC just knows how much water in in the cake before it makes pins. Then it decides how big it can make them. After that well..............

Mycellium is definately a strange substance. It almost seems to contain some sort of intelligence. Did you ever read about the GIANT mushrooms? Scientists used to think they were isolated areas of fruits, but now they found huge underground mycellium networks, all working together as a single living organism. Now that's weird! I also wonder sometimes how this little strange substance knows how to mess with the human mind so drastically, and it doesn't seem in a harmfull way either, more of a "warning" like, hey, you ate the wrong shroom buddy! Or maybe, some sort of way to communicate? People always say how they feel closer to nature on mushrooms (wanting to be outside etc as opposed to inside in a dark room).

Yeah MYC is a very amazing creature. I call it a creature because that is just how it acts. I have seen MYC do some very strange things.

Examples from my experience

I dropped a small chunk no bigger then a pinky finger tip into the bottom of my fruiting chamber. It made 7 pins........HUGE PINS but never grew full shrooms

I had several quart jars that got very contaimed from a bad syringe. I just put them under my porch and forgot them. Several weeks later I go and get them. Grrrrrrrrrrr I never cleaned them out but LOOK No shit. While 90% of the grain was all black and nasty and the bottom half was soaked in a strange yellow brew of water and foulness. In each jar there was a small amount of MYC grwoing near the top of the jars. The MYC had pushed fingers to the top and had filled the top of teh jars with Shrooms. I just could not believe my eyes. Shrooms had grown in the most contaimed conditions you can think off. And the temps under my porch were any where from 60 degs to 100 degs depending on the sun. Amazing

Another time I threw a cup of water filled with spores left over from a batch of syringes. But I threw it over a pile of left over cooked grain. The entire pile ended up in my compost pile. 3 weeks later.......Freaking shrooms. But the grain was covered in mold. WTF?

Yeah MYC is both very delicate and determind to LIVE.
