Has anyone here ever tried a commercial air lock system that removes air from a storage medium?
I've seen vacuum pumps that will take all air out of jars and bags, and I was wondering if they'd keep mushrooms fresh. Does psilocybin oxidize? If it does, how long would the above method keep it in the mushrooms?

excellent question. i do not have an answer, but im also interested now. I bet you could keep shrooms for YEARS if you dried them and vacuum sealed them.

foaf uses vacuum containers. hasn't been using them long enough to give any figures though. theory says it will help a lot, though.

I was thinking more along these lines:
If the package is made air-tight, no animals could smell the shrooms (hint, hint). This could also work for other things, like herbs (hint, hint, hint).
Also, are "animals" trained to find mushrooms?
I'm thinking about buying either a Pump-N-Save or a Tilia FoodSaver. When I was younger, I remeber companies advertising vacuum sealers. They'd keep produce fresh for months, without refrigeration. Mushrooms last awhile dry, so they'd probably, at least, last a few months when vacuum sealed.

I have the foodsaver and I think it's great. Dry goods keep longer than I have ever saved anything, alot longer than a couple months. For your purpose, I would use a jar, unless you don't mind crushing the stuff.
Things with alot of liquid can be frozen and then sealed in a bag. But that won't work for things like asparagus or fresh portabellas because the stuff turns to a wet mush when thawed.
And I would think that it's safe to assume that as long as there is a vaccuum in the container, there would be nothing to pique the interests of a canine. But you had better make sure that no scent marked the outside.

I also use it to presoak rye. I just add liquid to the jar to cover the rye and then add more later to keep it covered as the water is absorbed. Then I just drain and p/c. You can even save the drained liquid, if you want, to use next time.

I'm with you brown pastures, it does oxidise and because of that my friend always makes sure that when runing his ozone generator the shrooms are put away so that these ions dont break down the psylocybin..wouldn't want to get that far and end up witm munchies that are bunk. peace

A vaccume sealer would totally help keep your shit fresh, and if you washed bags off really well, mabey threw in coffee or hot peppers, dogs would be clueless.

In Europe don't they use special pigs to find truffles? Maybe George Jr will lease some truffle pigs from France and rewire their brains to make them find psi shrooms instead.. other than that possibility I think all mushrooms smell pretty much the same. I don't think psilocybin has a scent really. I was looking at that foodsaver -I think tilia.com- for just this purpose, seems like a fantastic way to preserve fresh picked mushrooms.

Dogs and pigs, etc. smell a lot of compounds which for us don't smell. So I wouldn't be sure that a dog can't smell psilocybin, especially it being an alcaloid. The question is if the amount in a pack of mushrooms is enough. I mean 20 mg psilocybin/psilocin isn't specifically much. Besides the traffic with shrooms isn't big enough, so that it would be of interest to train a dog/pig (to costly).
BTW they don't use pigs anymore for searching truffles. Pigs happen to love truffles, thats why they search them, and there was always a loss. They use now dogs specially trained, which don't eat truffles...

Would this work better than storing in CO2? I've got a keg fridge, so I have easy access to my CO2 tank . . . I wonder which works better. And if CO2 does, is it OK to use with a plastic tupperware container? I couldn't find a suitable glass one, but I'll get some if I have to . . .

If you put shrooms in a jar,and took out all of the air with one of those pumps,they would probably last 5 years.

I bought an Airtight Bag-&-Seal on eBay for 10 bucks. Doesn't quite work as smoothly as the commercials :-), but when you get a good seal your left with a nice little vacuum pakcage of shrooms. Haven't had it long enough to be able to tell weather or not potency remains high for long periods, but I can only image that it does as there's very little oxidation going on.

Yes, a dog could be trained to detect psilocybin, however the traffic of psilocybin containing mushrooms isnt that big that it would make the money worth to train them..it costs a fortune to train a dog to detect a new substance.
Today dogs cant detect psilocybin.

Yes CO2 is great for storing mushies.
As for training your dog to find mushrooms. Here's how i tought my dog to hunt herb. (real fun for when unsuspecting greedy weed fiends arive) I read about this method in this old dog book i found in the library so i can't give the person who wrote it a big "hell yea".....
1. get yourself an ounce of some crap weed you don't really want to smoke but don't mind selling if your pocket's get tight 
2. if your dog already has a toy and it's stuffed with something this will suit you perfectly. other than that get yourself a big ass gymsock (one you wore so the dog associates the smell with you and something he likes to do with you )
3. stuff your new dog toy with your herb.
4. play with your dog for a while with this toy and then eventualy incorporate a "hiding game" into your daily playtime w/ your dog
5. "hiding game"- choose a short snappy word for your "find", "get", whatever command
Begin with hiding it drawers under clothes ect.
After your dog masters this hiding game it's time to get your dog used to playing it outside.
Remember, this method works with some dogs better than others. Those breeds that instinctively love to smell for stuff would obviously be more interested in looking for whatever you trained him/her to look for.

Damn, that's a great idea BrownPastures! What breed is your dog? I think I'm going to try this with my Labrador! Have you taught your dog to smell for other stuff?
This might actually be fun, as I go hiking in the woods all the time, and sometimes I even see "herbs" growing!
