It's a good thing in general, but I'm just against public funding for it. IMO, all research should be privately funded.

Yeah, unless you approach it from a fundamentalist christian's point of view, stem cell research is all good.

Actually, consider how overpopulated this world is already. Do we really want to make people live even longer when this world is already so overcrowded?

curing disease is more about improving the quality of life, not necessarily extending the legnth.

The biggest problem with the massive population is are inability to efficiently use the available resources. Of course there will eventually be a limit to the sustainable population that our planet can maintain, regardless of how effectively we can utilize our resources, but we should nevertheless, strive to improve the quality of life, so long as it is beneficial to society as a whole. Personally though, I think one of the best things for humanity would be for some massive catastrophic event to come and wipe out a large chunk of the population.

If I was ever dying of cancer or AIDS, I would refuse all the painful treatment and just die quickly.

It depends on my age. If I was young and contracted one of those diseases, Id want to overcome it and live my life.

May be just a survival instinct...

I support stem cell research 100%. Sacrifice for the greater good is the problem. If you could cure cancer among other diseases, I think it would be well worth it.

An important thing to remember about stem cell research is that there are two kinds. Fetal stem cell research and adult stem cell research.

In the first case the stem cells come from aborted fetuses which are cloned, and in the other they come from adult tissue. A lot has been said about fetal stem cell research lately because it centers on the hot-button issue of abortion, but there is little in the news about the good things happening with adult stem cells. Adult stem cells are actually being used to cure people now (I have donated them myself), but it is my understanding that work on the fetal stem cells has yet to produce a cure for a disease.

No one opposes the use of adult stem cells to cure diseases and save lives; this new line of medicine is already saving many lives and shows much promise.

Those who oppose fetal stem cell research do so be cause it always includes killing a fetus with unique human DNA. To these people if it is alive and has unique human DNA, then it is a live human person that should be protected by law.

From these peoples perspective using cells from an aborted fetus as medicine is a rather sophisticated form of cannibalism.

How would one go about donating stem cells? I give blood all the time, didn't know I could donate stem cells?

You have to be genetically matched with someone who needs them. I registered with the red cross bone marrow donor program when I was in the navy and ten years later I got a call from them saying that i was match for someone who had leukemia; he needed bone marrow stem cells. They shot me up with some drugs that make the stem cells in the bones come out into the blood stream and then they filtered them out. That was three years ago, and from what I here the guy is alive and doing well. Adult stem cells from fat tissue have also been used to cure some deceases, sorry i don't remember the details.
So, to donate stem cells you have to first register in the red cross data base and then be a match for somebody with a very close genotype.

I think I read somewhere that they also use cells from the belly button.

There is no right or wrong, it just is... only seeing the possible outcomes of such research will there ever be an aswer to your question. Beliefs are infinte!
