Can I use non-tappered jars?
    #3394825 - 11/21/04 11:22 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I'm aware that it is preferable to use tappered jars as the cakes will slide out, if I don't is there any chance the cake will come out freely? I am not sure of the consistency of the substrate or how solid it will be, will this be possible?

Thank you in advance!  :mushroom2:

if this is ur first grow and u plan on doing cakes then u need the wide mouths, but if u are going to case then u can just use a steriliazed spoon to break up the cake and then pour into ur casing container.

In tappered I am assuming you mean the wide mouth jars?? apposed to the non wide mouth? if so it really depends on what you are going to do with the cake after and what you are using for a substrate, if you are planing on casing it is not really nessarcy to have a wide mouth jar, although I still find it easier but since you are breaking up the mycelium already it should not be a big deal. For cakes I could not really imagine the entire cake coming out with out a sort of jar that is the same diameter at the opening as it is at the bottom or larger at the opening than at the bottom (tappered).

Cakes are solid, well rather solid. It'd be kind of like trying to pull out a rubber cylinder. That's tough and prob. impossiable to take it out w/o damaging the mycelium tissue. Gl

Damnit! Well neither Safeway or Thrify Foods (my two supermarkets) have 'wide-mouth' half pint jars! Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look?

I am starting my grow tommorow. If I can't find wide mouthed jars is there anything else I can use in their place? I am doing 10 cakes.

check a local walmart and such. I dunno if ya got a meijer around ya, but i found mine there.

Look for Ball Brand 1/2 Pint Wide-Mouth Jars, they're most excellent. (Just a recommendation tho)

you can use non widemouth jars as long as they don't have a shoulder (meaing the lid is narrower then the actualy jar, like a spagetti sauce conter) if they are regular mouth and just straight down they're fine.. you're cakes shrink a bit when fully colonized.

I went about starting my first jars with non tappered jars. Luckily my friend, Derx, had some wide mouth quart jars to trade me, because he only needed them for casing mix. But I'm new, so I'm beginning with cakes also. Be careful using anything plastic though, my friend used oven-safe plastic shit before and it still melted all over the oven when he was sterilizing for prints. I'm searching for some 1/2 pint jars now too, hoping that they are in stock as it is getting out of canning season here.

Hey Buddy

You could try buying a box of drinking glasses. Those may work

Don't have a jar part on them!

As long as the jars arent tappered INWARD you can use them. Tappered outward is prefered but the ones with the straight sides will work fine.
