I am growing roughly 3,000 peyote seedlings in Canada, and one has turned out to be an albino! Since it does not have chlorophyll, it will die as soon as the nutrient reserves run out, can anyone suggest a way to keep it alive? I have been thinking about using a .3M sucrose solution, but can this be taken up by the roots, or must it absorb through the top of the plant - is this even possible?
I don't know if any of these options are any use for long-term, grafting may be the only way. I have never grafted a cactus before, should I attempt it with this one? I could practice with other green ones. I have read on the forum of people grafting 1 month old seedlings, but they are so tiny. Anyway, any help whatsoever is appreciated, I will post a pic soon.

Graft that baby! That would be exquisite. Graft onto a pereskiopsis, let it get a little bigger, and then graft it onto a larger rootstock, like a trich or something similar. 3000 seedlings, huh? Lucky bastard. That's a lot of positive energy!

will grafting it keep it alive?

I would think so. Once it's grafted it doesn't have to rely on itself for food, but it's rootstock. The rootstock has chlorophyll and will make food and channel it into the seedling. Any opinions from the cacti guru's here? Neuro? Stonehenge? If you get it to live and grow larger, perhaps you could take an areole graft and produce a couple more. I'm pulling for your little buddy!!

Hi Lifenergy! Thanks for the helpful input. I did some research, and found this site: http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjslat/albinos/breeding.htm saying that grafting is what you must do. It won't last much more than a week without, so I need rootstock fast. Anyone know where I could find a sutably small rootstock of a variety that works well for peyote? I will pay anyone by paypal who can send me some. I know what you mean, the thought of a full grown white peyote specimen is just amazing, if it flowered the seeds might have more chance of producing others, I would like to keep it alive. I need to find a source of sucrose, and info on how to use it to keep this plant alive longer, until I can graft. If it were older I think I'd have much better chances anyway.. Thanks all! Steve

You'll need to find someone in Canada with some pereskiopsis, and fast. Sending a cutting from the states would be impractical right now, because you would first have to root the cutting, and then graft. By the time you got your cutting rooted, the albino would be dead Maybe you could graft it onto a trich or other columnar cacti even with it being a seedling? I'm not sure, and I hope someone with more knowledge of this chimes in. If you can, go get the first suitable rootstock you can find, and go to it.

I just "watered" the albino seedling with .3M sucrose - common table sugar = glucose + fructose solution, which is recommended for keeping albino plants alive. At any rate this shouldn't hurt, and it might buy me some time. If I am going to graft this plant, I want to be sure I can do so with a regular green seedling first. I will look for pereskiopsis in Canada. Thanks.

If you aren't too familiar with grafting you might run into some problems.
See http://www.sphosting.com/cactus/ for tips.
You can probably pick up a suitable base plant at any hardware garden store.
Such seedlings are called variegated.
Good luck!

I would culture it.
The things i'm not entire sure about are giving it a sucrose solution to soak through the roots while it's in soil. But in a culture it gets nutrients from the agar even without inducing root growth. Therefore i don't really know if pouring water with sucrose into the soil would absorb to feed it.
I wonder about the grafting, if someone else knows or has similar experience they could clarify, but in a culturing class i took, we culture out chimeras from african violets. We cultured them to get plantlets, and after they were planted they turned green again. So it makes me think that even if you graft it, it might turn green eventually. By what exact mechanism i'm not sure in either case.

sometimes in garden centers you see these grafted colored cacti. they need to be grafted to keep them alive (pink or yellow ones I've seen. very ugly btw!) and they stay that color. maybe with the alsbine it works the same, it's worth a try you can also graft the on san pedro oth other cactus to keep them alive I think

Una would be the person to go to. Grafting to pereskiopsis seems the only way to go, i would get alot of practice first. I dont think the roots can absorb the sugar through its roots. http://www.mushmush.nl/?page=home\gallery\cacti
