JESUS CHRIST!
I chopped my 6' pedro down and made 2 doses out of 4 feet of it and I started a bunch of new little pedros in pots. About a month ago I transfered one into the ground in an almost full sun area. If it survives the winter I'll be anxious to see how it grows this summer when it's got 100% unbound root space.
I'm not sure it'll make it though. We do see temps dipping down into the 10s and rarely single digits here. I think when it's forcasted to drop into the teens I'm gonna cover it up with a blanket. An experiment is an experiment I suppose. I'll let ya know how it goes.

I might put one of mine in the ground at my parents home. They stay outside year round anyway now. I've desided that it is just too much headache to try to move them in every winter. I won't do it with all of them though. I like to keep some with me and that means that they must remain mobile.

I've put some Opuntia's in the ground to see how they survive the winter here in GA. I'm just north of 285.
In the spring I was thinking about putting a few cuttings into the ground to see how they do over the summer. Have to work on the clay soil though.....

How harsh of a winter can Pedro handle?
What zones is it hardy to?

They can take freezing but dont like it so that would put them in the zone 10 high 9. You could grow them in a grenhouse in zone 9-8 with some heating or good greenhose design. http://www.pearyhenson.org/trichocereus/san_pedro_cactus.htm

Yes pedro's are very resilient cacti. They can handle a few frosts, I live in an area that gets down to -5 or so sometimes in the winter, left them outdoor all year round and they are lovin it! They stop growing in winter of course but they begin growing again in spring. A little bit north of me there are dudes with massive outdoor gardens planted in the ground, only too 4 years or so for them to get 2 meters tall!
