    #3393623 - 11/21/04 06:39 PM (12 years, 17 days ago)

Would it be opssible to case an agar substrate? Small agar cubes that are in a jar, totally colonized? Water content is great and nutriotion too..so why not?

Fruiting on agar has occured plenty so why not fruit on agar? Yield. BTW water content isn't as available as you would think, agar will not give it up readily.

Sure, if you don't mind having to use up twenty petri dishes to get a few grams. This is probably no more than a tenth of a gram.

yes but agar substrate is very easy to produce. Couldnt one fill a jar
3/4 with a usual MEA and then when it becomes hard, break it into smaller pieces and let colonize..jut like u do grains ro else..

it would be far to costly even for food grade in bulk....

1lb agar, $36
1lb grain $2

the organic rye i get is 70 cents a pound and the agar is 6 bucks an ounce or 96 bucks a pound. Not very cost effective in comparison!

i think the question is 'why?', rather then 'why not?'... its not like mushroom cultivation is in dire need of new substrates with nutrition and water content.

"A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

I'll just add my two cents and say stick to what works until what can work better becomes cheaper
