help!!??? larve in my jars
    #3390943 - 11/20/04 09:35 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

first of all ---EWWWW GROSS and DISGUSTING
there are little (1/8 of an inch) cream colored wiggly moving THINGS in two of my 6 jars that were inoculated 10days ago -- i gonna assume this counts as contamination and toss them, right??? - has this ever happened to anyone else (probably). the other 3 are doing fine with mycelium growing - but i had 3 lagging jars with nothing - i let them sit on the counter top for a day and it seems on has the faintest beginnings of some mycelium - but the other 2 have things crawling all in them. could a bug have gotten through the top layer of vermiculite and lain eggs, or did something survive my pressure cooking?

possible that eggs survived pc ing
also possible that eggs were in with the spores
as well as the possibility that a mushroom fly entered the jar
seeing where only two jars were affected most probable the thired
if those were the jars left out then thats where it happend

i checked out the contamination page but they dont have the black heads that they describe. plus i dont have any mushrooms and it says the flies are attracted to the mushroom crop - also could they get through that top layer of vermiculite - isnt that supposed to protect the mycelium?

there are several species of mushroom flies as well as fungas gnats
if the little magots have a black head they are probably a Lycoriella

EWWW!!
Kill the buggers!
Microwave till they stop moving and hope you didn't kill every mycelium....untested idea, use at own risk. They might not survive a freezing either and it might be kinder to the mycelium some mushroom species don't care about cold but will die if it gets too hot.:jester:

Hey bro that happened to me once. Definately toss the jars..

However I belive mine came from contaminated syringes, every jar I inocced with 4 B+ syringes contammed and many of them had those little creepy crawlers. Toss 'em i say..

Someone else reported the same thing just a few days ago. The topic is here. Do you have anything in common with him? (Vendor, strain, etc.)
