Quick grain/seed question!

ok well now i realize its not really that quick of a question but hey it grabbed your attention right AFOAF went to his local organic grocer and accidentally bought 5lbs of hulled Spelt( has anoyne used b4?), then he realized and bought 5lbs of rye berries, and also 5lbs of hulled millet. What a variety he saw, so he decided it would be best to experiment. He just wanted to know if they should all be prepared the same way, he was gonna soak them for like 10 hours over night, rinse and soak for another 10 hours while he was at school, then proceed to simmer the grain for about half an hour. moreover he was planning on watching the different grains, he imagines millet, rye, and spelt will all become saturated at different times prolly. The main thing is to stop before the kernels start exploding right? after this he would drain and make corresponding spawn jars( he was wondering if he should still add some water to jars b4 PCing, or would simmering be enough hydration?), PCing at 15 psi for 1-2 hours for each kind of grain. he just wanted to know if any of the grains he bought need special attentin, or less attention at that. also he was thinking of making a couple mix jars, with all three or two of the three grains in them. Has anyone done this? It seems like a good idea, unless the grains contamed with eachother or something weird. Thanks and he will update his findings, atleast on colonization, hes not sure if he wants to do bulk fruiting with straw or if he wants to make some mini casings to compare fruits of different grains.

Sounds good, I'd watch them and when kernals start to split, start to cut the simmer. The hydration from simmering is plenty, you do not want to add water to the jars before PCing, that would be asking for some contams to come chill there. Pc of 1 hour will work, I PC for 1.5 hours always. Do it up and post your results.

ok, sounds good, i thought adding water would be overkill. but ya i will def post HIS results He's excited to see what a mixture would do, i mean variety is the spice of life, im sure mycelium likes to consume a little something different here and there also he is goin to put tyvek over the metal lids, then screw into place. this seems to be the most sterile, contam free way to do it, unless hes thinking wrong.

The spice extends life, the spice expands consciousness. Is he using the metal circular lids ontop of the tvyek? If so he better make sure there is some type of breather hole in the metal ring.

> 5lbs of hulled millet.
Hulled millet is NOT suitable to be used as a whole grain.

no, tyvek on top. he was thinking that the seal of the rubber would be better direct, rather than tyvek layer between. would the space between tyvek and lid be ok if the tyvek is on top? would little contams be able to get in? he drilled holes in the metal lids, so tyvek on top or bottom? thats the question. he still has some soaking to do so maybe i should start another thread for him?

id throw tvyek under the metal circular lid if it has holes in it. Or you can just do plain tvyek. That's what AFOAF does.

well because of the drilling there was sharp edges, he pushed the edges down, plus there are some sharp points too on the bottom side. he will just have tyvek on top. he heard that just tyvek can sometimes dry out jars. i will post his results, though it will be a while. Also is Spelt alright anno? also i was thinking what about supplementing the other grains with a lil millet. unless hulled is worthless, or contam-ridden or something

if there are sharp edges on the bottom side, just flip it upside down. Both sides work well.
