desiccant availability in the U.K (urgent) ?
    #3392377 - 11/21/04 08:51 AM (12 years, 15 days ago)

My now better understood first Cubensis (box, bag and Bio-light) cultivation attempt is going well. I now need to be able to properly dry my shrooms, have got large tupaware drying box etc. but need a decent desiccant. My Mother is sending me (N.Devon champion dried flower arranger and visited horticulturalist) a few ounces of drierite she ordered from "Boots" a decade ago. Have so far had no luck elsewhere, can anyone advise?
I have also heard that "Borax" is a desiccant, but I believe it is a powder and therefore may more easily contaminate, any thoughts?  :jamming:

The biggest B+Q you can find.

Look for Kilrock moisture trap. Either in the plumbing section or ask someone. I hate those bloody places. May be near dehumidifiers. The big bag in there is pure CaCl2.

Sadly, I don?t know about the availability of desiccants in the UK

But this I do know. If you harvest any volume of Shroom?s? Ponder they are 90% water by weight & desiccants are not all that fast acting.

Your best bet is to use a "dehydrator" to start with, then a desiccant to maintain them in a dehydrated state.

You can often find expensive thermostatically controlled "dehydrators" at second hand stores, at very low cost. You want a thermostatically controlled dehydrator, so you able to control & maintain the drying temperature (below 98F).

Hope this helps?

Woolworths sells bags of calcium chloride as refills for a wardrobe boxlike thing to keep clothes dry. also some DIY shops have desiccant, in the paint section.

Thanks guys (server down last night -ntl- so I apologise for not getting back to you). How do you guys go about prelim drying without a dehydrator? I place mine near a radiator -set to a normal timed household heating regime- on cardboard covered in "silver" foil.
Also are there any contamination issues with "Kilrock" or Calcium Chloride?

My aardvark pulled one of the zillions of fans out of his computer, and stuck it to the top and uses that to blow air over the top of the pc where his shrooms are laid out. After from 12-24 hours, generally when they are like - stringy -, he puts em in with the aforementioned chloride. another day or so and they are snappy. No worries about contams.

Make sure the containers airtight, put a bag over it and tie it if not sure. Might work on just desiccant alone but will take longer and use the stuff up quicker. I imagine radiator drying should be OK so long as they don't get too hot, err on the lower side of 30 C to be on the safe side.

Nice one, (probably 20-25c actually!). Found a calcium chloride supplier. How close to the chloride should I put the drying screen for the shrooms inside the box? Also how much chloride-how much semi-dry weight of shrooms?

lol a bit in depth.. I don't think my aardvark is straight long enough to make the calculations!

As long as the container is sealed I don't think it matters much how close they are, the chloride sucks all the moisture out of the air which causes increased evaporation from the shrooms, so its an equilibrium rather than direct water suckage. Just put a thin layer to cover the bottom of the container, and bung the shrooms in. You will know when to change the chloride, it will progressivley watery. Likely you can cracker dry a lot of shrooms before this happens, unless you have some *massive* grow going on.. I know my aardvark has.

btw that post means bung them in with the screen.. Don't put them directly on the actual chloride.. this is very bad.
