Psilocybe Castanella
    #3387412 - 11/20/04 01:28 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

I was reading some of the shit at http://www.mssf.org/ and I noticed a species called Psilocybe Castanella was shown at a fair in Oakland. The one picture and description lead me to believe a certain LBM I've seen here in Cal might be this Castanella, though its a rare chance. Can any put some impt into this species? I guessed its called Psilocybe Apelliculosa in Europe, so maybe its similiar to Psilocybe Pelliculosa?

Hi, Read your above post and was wondering where you saw a photo of the alledged species psilocybe castanella. SAS far as the scientific and mycologiical literature reads. There is no such species. I did noticve the bname of this species listed int he list for the Oakland shroom fair for 2003 but cannot find any photograph. And no one is calling this mushroom apeliiculosa in Europe.

Could you please show the image and page URL for the picture yuou say you viewed. I can only find P. cyanescens and P. cayanofibruilosa listed int he mycoweb index for Califorinia, which I already know grows there.

There is panaeolus castaneifolius in California. Maybe someone made a mistake int he name and spelling of the species.

Guzman also does not knwo this species and he is the author of the monographgg of the genus Psilocybe.

Mj

Please let me know what it is you are looking at.

btw, P. pelliculosa is an alder woodchip shroom foound generally in Clearcuts int eh PNW and in Scandinavia.

mj

I personally known Dennis so I have not heard about this from him and talked to him this year once already.

mj- i did a google search and found this:

http://www.entoloma.nl/html/pscastanella.html

not from the oakland fair but it discusses the shroom and says it's called P. apelliculosa in europe.

Well that is an old reference which means that the name has been changed by Orton to something else.

If it is a psilocybe than it is a non-actiove and P. pelliculosa has nothing to do with P. pelliculosa since that mushroom only gorowas in alder chips and not in grass, although it willa ppear in grass at forests edge where mulch remains from logging out logs. But thent he images yuou show look nothing like P. pelliculosa.

many Psilocybes also use to be named naematolomas, Deconica, Psathyrellas, Papilionacea, and other names int he past and later changesd to new genera when certain macroscopic and microscopic characteristics required a new designation.

Thanks for the search. I really doubt that the mushroom is in SAn fran since it is primarilly known from Europe, but then againt hat listing is an old name. I will look in Guzman's book to see if it was changed to another name form its original.

Remember thaere are between 80 to 100 or so species of Psilocybe which are not psychoactive.

mj

and have a shroomy day

I will write Guzm?n about this and see what he says.

http://www.entoloma.nl/html/engels.html

This is the main webpage for that site. Up at the top are links to various genera. Also info on the fella who runs the site. I thought it was odd that these are identified as psilos with the spore print being red brown. Isn't that kinda odd? Or are there other psilocybes with brown or red brown prints?
