Substrate Discussion (moving to grains)
    #3391950 - 11/21/04 04:14 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Well the PF tek has been working wonderfully for me w/ cubes in the past couple of months and now it's time to upgrade to grains. I have been reading old threads comparing and discussing rye, wbs, and popcorn and I can honestly say I still have no idea which I would like to try first. Rye seems to be popular, but popcorn and wbs are much easier to obtain for me. So....

Cut and dry Cliffnote style, what are pros and cons about each? Is it worth the extra effort to obtain some rye? I'm mostly concerned about potency more than anything else.

Thanks,
Mikol

The cat has used all the grains that you mentioned with success but he prefers WBS for the following reasons.
1) Easily obtainable
2) Inexpensive
3) Easy preparation
4) It's small size makes it ideal for spawn.

Potency is difficult to guage because of the variables involved but I believe mushies fruited from WBS are as potent as those from any other grain.

Good luck. :mushroom2:

I'm a rye guy myself. I've had mixed results with wbs and have never tried popcorn. IME rye has worked the best for me. As far as potency, if there was one that grew more potent shrooms everyone would use it. Its all good. :goodluck:

I think WBS would also be a good choice from what I have read recently. Another question. Would there be a bit of difference in potency between wbs and BRF pf style?

Thanks again

wbs is the best in your list becaue it contains millet which is the most nutritious grain you can use for shrooms...but straight white millet is better obviously...if your gonna case straight millet(or any grain) I HIGHLY suggest you mix in an equal amount of verm to millet...millet and other grains do not hold much water...and mushrooms get most of their water from the substrate...I promise you will not be dissappointed

2 casings done with millet and verm...first was 3qts millet/3qts verm, 2nd was 2qts millet/1qt verm

Thank you for the clear and concise response. I really like your casings also.....beautiful. WBS would probably be better also because it's easy to get in this small town.

anyone else want to comment?

WBS is best used as "spawn" into a compost substrate, then "cased". But, "compost" is a whole other ball game.

But, WBS will work fine as a substrate for small tray batches. Use a bit of "dung tea" & add little "cracked corn" in the "soak" stage of the WBS & it performs better as a stand alone substate, IMHO.

But wbs does work well when cased alone, correct?
