A couple of Trichocereus questions
    #3389987 - 11/20/04 04:36 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I purchased a cactus last year from a nursary labeled T pachanoi. I have identified it as a T scopulicola (spelling?) Can I get any confirmation on this? Also a month after this photo it has sent out a pup from the base! Is that unusual for a scop?

This cactus was labelled as a Trichocereus purpureopilosus but since reading various books I see different looking trichs labelled as purpureopilosus. I've seen some labelled as Echinopsis lamprochlora that look similar, they all have massive brilliant nocturnal flowers I believe.

The first is without any doubt a T. scopulicola. T. purpureopilosa and T. lamprochlora are synonyms. I'm not sure your plant is this one thought. Tough call. Looks more like T. candicans which is much more common in cultivation.

Trichocereus spp are said to be characteristically base puppers. So it's not unusual. In my experience I've found it not really to be characteristic with any of my members.
