Anybody seen Grateful Dawg?
    #3390059 - 11/20/04 05:00 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

It doesn't seem like shit is going on tonight, and Grateful Dawg is on the Independent Film Channel at 8... I've heard a few shows of Garcia and Grissman - and I assume the movie's worth checking out, but has anybody seen it before? What'd you think? Worth staying in to check out?

Yep I've seen it too.. twice in fact - very good!

It's a documentary, and the cool thing is that Jerry and Grisman insisted that their songs were played in full throughout the film.  So even though there's a fair bit of talking, you still get the great effect of the music.
:jamming:

.. and the commentary ain't so bad either, quite a fun watch

god, i know! you see him sitting there, smiling and strumming, with Grissman's dog running around in the background - and you can really see the "wear-and-tear" that living a life like his had (physically and spiritually, i guess). i think the most touching part of that whole movie was Grissman's son (I think his name was Sam? not the film-maker, but his younger son - he seems to be about 12 or so in the interview) talking about Jerry's passing.

the funniest part, though, was when they interview the fiddler from Old and In The Way, and he is saying how somebody asked him if he didn't mind playing with "long-hairs and beards"

i definitely recommend the film, now that i've seen it, to everybody - whether you are a Dead fan or not!

Yeah that's Vassar Clements one hell of a fiddle player!

It seems that the whole Grisman family loved Jerry very much, the film was made by his daughter and produced by Billy's son Justin.
