I think seritonin(sp?) is what makes you trip. So I want to make sure I have a a full gland's worth in a few days.

5 HTP (L-Hydroxytryptophan) is metabolized into seritonin.
Quote:
L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that is converted into 5HTP in the body. 5HTP is then converted into serotonin and melatonin. Low levels of serotonin have been associated with uneasiness, carbohydrate cravings and weight gain, mood, sleep disorders and substance dependence.

It's not a vitamin, it's amino acid.
you need to buy it seperately, hit up a health store or GNC or something

Isn't it coke that affects the dopamine receptors?

to pretty simply explain it, it's the chemical that controls your happiness. things like ecstacy boosts it for a while and cripples it on the come down. lack of it on a long term basis causes a whole slew of different mental illnesses.

You could draw a chart like this:
L-Tryptophan -> 5-HTP -> Serotonin
L-Tryptophan is an amino acid that used to be OTC but now is prescription only, because of one contaminated batch and Prozac. In the body, L-Tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP, which is then converted to Serotonin...assuming I remember any of my biochemistry. 5-HTP bypasses one step, making it faster acting and more potent molecule for molecule. I personally prefer L-Tryptophan however.
Most hallucinogens work with the Serotonin itself and receptors. Ecstasy causes a large discharge of Serotonin, and this often leads to either brain damage or severe depression if appropriate steps are not taken.
5-HTP is expensive, but it does get the job done. (Anyone know of interactions good or bad with 5-HTP and marijuana? shrooms? etc?)
As for a dopamine precursor, I believe L-Tyrosine is (I think it also is a norepinephrine precursor).
Serotonin controls everything from mood to alertness and sleepiness to hunger.

If I'm not mistaken, does extacy not simply tie up the mechanism which removes the excess serotonin from between the synapses, making it so all that serotonin is left floating around in there, eventually finding itself tied to a serotonin receptor? This would seem logical, since it makes for alot of serotonin being used, which would explain the harsh comedown of extacy.

Everything else you have said is right on the money, but im afraid this comment about ecstasy is wrong. I have ectsasy, i dont take "appropriate steps" like 5-HTP or anything and i dont have brain damage or severe depression. Neither does most ectasy useres unless they are chronic users in which case i agree with you but your comment is not true for the once a month popper like me...

Nope, AFAIK ecstasy doesn't do that. However, MAOI's do that.
The_notorious: From what I've found, it seems to vary from person to person...some people can take two rolls and not have the slightest side effect, while others can take the same two, and then deplete all of their serotonin and end up morbidly depressed for months or even years after. I have heard of both, yet I'm still not sure why this is.

Hmm thats weird, i have known both chronic and occassional users and i havent seen one person effected by depression. Im talking about 20-30 users of ecstasy that i know. I have seen the odd "day after" depression where they are a bit down but nothing like months or years?
