Growth Medium For Rooting A Cactus Cutting
    #3389084 - 11/20/04 02:24 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I read something last night about when rooting a cactus cutting, you should put them in a sand/vermiculite mix rather then a soil mix because it can harbor bacteria with could be harmful to the cactus, but the sand/vermiculite mix harbors much less and so it more beneficial to the cactus if put in this, and once it gets roots, put it in the soil mix. I've never heard of this before, I guess it would make sense though. Does anyone do this rather then just putting it a your cactus mix and letting it root?

I normally do a similar mix (not exactl sand and verm) for seeds, but for rooting, i generally don't do that, but the logic is there for the same. I normally just heat the soil 1 minute on high per cup of cactus soil i'm going to use and root the cutting in there, that way it's not being repotted like crazy.
