    #337863 - 06/10/01 10:17 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

Well.. my 3 caked are a month old now.. and colonizing VERY slowly.. bout 50 - 60 % now.. im afraid the contams will take over before they finish. Is there anything I can do to speed these up?

whats the temp? strain?
maybe you got them too cool or hot. personally i put my jars down the bladder of my waterbed and then cover the lids over with apholstry foam for contam protection (because they are in human bedding! how unclean!)
and the slowness may be due to genetics too. im using cambos myself, the ideal strain if youre impatient or nervous about out-running contams :)

They Are Eq's. I have them inside a rubbermaid container in a box covered with a blanket. Temp is probably around 20 ?C

Your substrate may be a little dry, or a little too wet or they may not have enough O2.  Try turning the jars upside down, and hitting the bottom with a paper-back book, knocking the cake down a little and givin air to the bottom half of the mycelia.

PlowKing, i'm having the exact same proplem as you, EQ's 20 degrees and they are only 50 60% after 1 month
My jars are very wet inside , alot of condensation on the top, this a problem? also for some reason the mycelm is growing at the bottom as well as the top and starting to meet at half way

I couldn't tell ya if the condensation is a problem.. im a newbie on my first attempt.. but i followed the measurements in the pftek to the letter so mine seem fine. Have you turned your jars over yet? and how many jars do you have?

Have you still got the holes covered with tape?
If so, take the tape off.

yes, i was going to say the same. colonize at around 32C if you can, thats the perfect temp for life to occur. its body temp in most warm blodded animals, egg incubation temp, and cultures grow most vigorously at exactly that temp.

ok i have around 5 jars, i just took the tape off like chonga said. There is alot of space at the top end of the jar, should i still turn them upside down..if yes for how long (i know i know.. alot of questions hehe =)
Its in the early stages of winter here in australia so it is pretty cold and i'm finding it hard to make my room a bit warmer for them to live...i'll just turn the heater on for a bit ;P

Wow, that?s too hot!
Stamets recomends 29-30?C substrate temperature, the ambient trmp. should be a few deg lover.
If the jars are colonizing for 3 months, then you most likely have a bacterial contamination.
Do they smell?
