Exploding/Melting Pressure cooker. (Funny Mishap)
    #3387117 - 11/20/04 12:06 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

So my and my buddy were chilling at his house today, and we had the ole cheap wally world pressure cooker running. The weight started rocking steadily, so he turned the heat down and we took off to another friends house. We returned about 45mins later to a smoke filled house, and a ruined pressure cooker. There was a large hole in the bottom of the pressure cooker, and a large deposit of what i assume is melted aluminum in my buddies stove top. I think all the water escaped in the form of steam cause the heat was too high, till the water was completely gone. Then since it was empty the bottom of the cooker melted, or exploded. The jars survived, and i belive the smoking house was from the towel that was at the bottom of the cooker, nothing more than ashes was left of it. So for all you crazy kids that think you can go check out your friends plants for a min. while leaving the pressure cooker unattended, THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA.

Never, ever, EVER leave a pressure cooker unattended. They're actually very dangerous...

He's lucky he didn't burn the house down.

I got the Presto 23 quart for Wally and it works great for me...you musta got a cheaper model.

Yes leavin PC unattended is a huge no no, a friend of mine did the same thing and the pressure cap shot thru his celing while he was gone.

If you are running out of water in your PC you obviously just need to add more!!

PC's can be dangerous bro, you are lucky you didn't burn your house down...especially with that towel in there. Not to mention that the lid flying off could take your head off. You need to find a setting on your stove that will stay right at 15Psi, i mean you see what too high of heat will do. A little above medium  is pretty close for me. Also, if you find a setting to keep your psi stable you won't lose as much water in steam (but you may wanna use a little more next time).BTW, my grandmother got burned pretty bad from an exploding pc, so be careful and stick around to keep an eye on it next time. Be safe.  :goodluck: :mushroom2:

This was not a presto, this is some mexican brand, made of aluminum. 8 quart size, 12 psi weight, 30 U.S. dollars at wall mart.

Wow, interesting to hear what others have to use. Just a tiny bit above Medium-Low is my sweetspot. I use Medium to get it up to temperature, though. It seems very efficient... even though it has a slight leak in release valve.

You really have to watch them. I have to set mine perfectly in the right spot.. I've gone off to do something else and came back 20 minutes later to find myself at 25PSI. Yikes. I've also had the opposite happen.. Come back after 20 mins to find it at 10PSI. Damnit! lol...

Hmmm this is triggering something here!
Bells are ringing!

You know why? Mayeb you read I mentioned my very slow (if any) growth in my PF jars. I used a wrong mix (3,5-1-1) and I did not shake the syringe.
The pint of popcorn is doing better.

Now I rememberd that when I was PC-ing the (PP plastic) jars that the water in my PC was finished, the PP did not melt but..

SIGH it makes no sense, but I finish the post anyway... :P

LOl it makes no sense cause I inoculated many hours later. I was thinking the lack of water gave the PC a higher temperature but ofcourse there was only cake mix in it and no spores...

Crap post...

Scary shit. Never leave a pc unattended.

Old folk used to have their pressure cookers "pressure tested" every few years just to make sure they were safe. Back then, pressure cookers were used alot more. Microwaves took their place.
