Rye- who soaks? who simmers?
    #3388269 - 11/20/04 10:02 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I was wondering if some of the people who have been using rye and have tried both soak and simmer or just adding the water and PCing what you think of it? I'm wondering if soaking is needed because I need some jars done and there was a mishap of me falling asleep last night with the PC on with a test batch of measuring water and rye content individually and the other burner had 10 pounds of grain simmering. Well everything burnt dry, rye is toasted to the bottom and shriveled (though wet looking) and tyveks all completly melted away (except on the center jar..didnt melt any, weird, sure theres a sceintifical explination but anyways). I'm thinking of salvaging some of the simmered rye from the top since only the bottom stuff is burnt. I dont know how well it will work out but nothing to lose but some liquid culture. I need some for sure jars though..got maybe 8-10 pounds of rye left (ordered some earlier yesterday luckily) but I dont know what to do..I'd like to just load the jars with a cup of rye and 210ml of water and PC them after a 30 minute soak or so but I dont know how risky that is. I'd rather let it soak if it'll be that bad but jars have been backed up and now time is ticking

I guess I was just wondering what most people do with there rye who have used it in different methods. Oh also, I was thinking that perhaps soaking and simmering works better for casing then just adding the water..maybe more water in the rye from simmering works better for casing but just adding correct amounts would work better with spawn then casing? Just some thoughts, I havnt tried anything other then soak and simmer but I certainly could save myself some time better spent harvesting..

I also add a little gypsum to the grains to control over wetting

hey Scat I pulled up one of my trusty calc/conv'ers and found that 4ft3 is actually 119.68831168831169 quarts. So you're right.

The is no need for those crusty(albeit trusty) converters, you can use google.

I soak for 12 hours then simmer for 30 minutes, drain for 30 minutes in a huge strainer. its worked beautifully every time. I have quarts right now that are almost ready. I inoculated with a multispore syringe last thursday or so. thats a pretty fast colonization in my experience. they are mike-o's B+

i soak, simmer, load up bags. A friend of mine is going to try just loading into a jar with proper amount of water to see what happens. Good luck scat, let me know how it goes, because I too wonder.

Well, this is my friend's uncle's first grow, so he followed the tek to a T... soaked for 24 hours, then rinsed, then simmered for 45 minutes, then strained and rinsed, then immediately started putting it into jars.

Just finished the last 3 jars in the PC... already knocked up the other 8 that were PC'd last night.

Well it seems everyone soaks and simmers lol.

The test batch I made that got fried in the PC had 3 jars left over which I PC'ed eariler with some casing mix and they turned out pretty shitty looking..didnt puff up..only just over half the jar taken up..I dunno I don't like it though..I'm going back to soak and simmer.

Well I figured after some looking that my calculations were right and orders some verm God damn I got 6 cu feet for like 29 bucks..thats like 180 quarts when 8 quarts was costing me like 3 or 4 bucks..plus a bale of coir that makes 70 liters..wow I'm glad the local place stopped carrying verm I had been getting ripped. Over 110 dollars worth of coir and verm shipped for 52 bucks..
