jar capacities of various sized PCs
    #3386278 - 11/19/04 10:00 PM (12 years, 18 days ago)

I know it's asking a bit much perhaps, but might someone write up a chart of how many half-pint, pint, and quart jars can fit into the average pressure cooker/canners of liquid capacity 4qt, 6qt, 8qt, 10qt, 15qt, etc (whatever the standard sizes are). Certainly dimensions vary by model so numbers wouldn't be very exact, but it'd be an enormous help to those looking to buy a PC if the information were centralized in single post. I'd do it, but I haven't a clue!

That'd be cool, actually.

I'll go double check with my 7-quart(liquid capacity) All-American PC so it can be added to the list.

WallMart = Rochedo by Maitre's 8quart pressure cooker with 12psi weight $32.00 U.S. currency will hold 5 wide mouth pint jars, or 4 quart jars.

WallMart(discontinued) = Presto 21 quart with pressure gauge up 20psi $75.00 U.S currency, will hold 24 half pint wide mouths, 10 pint wide mouths(12 if you stack 3 horizontally on top), 7 quart size jars.

djred - Go to wallmart/kmart/target, and get a Rochedo 8quart pressure cooker for $32.00, they only get up to 12psi, but the temp. difference between 12psi & 15psi is only 6 degrees. So you might go for an extra 30mins to play it safe, but its definitely a good p.c. for the price.

They're typically considerably more expensive than the the stove-top variety. For example: An electric 8qt pressure cooker, $128

I don't know, I can guesstimate about 10 since they fit 5 pint size wide mouths. I don't think you would need a pressure cooker for 1/2 pints, since half pints are usually used for brf/verm substrates (which you don't have to pressure cook - you just want to boil the 1/2 pints of brf/verm). If your planning on using rye or wbs or pop-corn you should go with at least a pint size jar.

Ok, just checked.

It can hold-

3 one quart jars
4 one pint jars
7 tall 1/2 pint jars
8 stubby 1/2 pint jars (stacked)

It can also fit 7 tall 1/2 pints + 3 stubby 1/2 pints stacked ontop.

so when making karo jars in little half pints you don't have to pc? or i should sya you could get away with just boiling for say 30 minutes if water is at boiling temp to start?

I'd suggest PCing for 20 mins, but I'm sure boiling for a while would also work.. I'd go longer than 30 mins.

well i only found a 6 qaurt they must have discontinue that brand.it was 40 dollars. so is it safe to say a 4 qaurt for 30 dollars would cook at 12 psi also? wish he could drop 90 dollars on a canner.

im sorry i just don't want to go out and buy a pc and fuck my whole project up.. if its not going to be the right deal for the right job..

This could be an awesome thread. A 'Pressure Cooker Cook-off'.
Perhaps everyone can post their PC experiences, good, bad,and ugly. Then the thread can be condensed into a table?

For instance:

Brand name
Model number and capacity
Price
Time used before failure(if it failed at all)
Reason for failure / other comments(neat features, things that could be better, etc.)

I agree, I'm an absolute nerd,

I'd get a stovetop PC no less than ~12qt because in the end, a 4qt won't cut it. You'll eventually be wanting to PC quart jars and such, so think ahead. I got a used Presto 18qt PC for $38 plus S&H on eBay and it can hold plenty (7 quart jars). Consider what you'll want, not just what you need for now.
