This is the deal. Not sure how many people know about this, but i can help anyone wanting to set this up for themselves. Everyone on here knows that i am a bluetooth advocate, and i have a lot of bluetooth devices laying around my house, cell phones, headsets, pdas, etc. and i use the internet access through my cell phone over bluetooth to get online... but that comes at a price... roughly $15 a month more through Sprint and $20 a month more through t-Mobile for unlimited data. Here is where things get interesting. If you get a pre-paid T-Mobile phone, one of their selling features is unlimited, free t-zones. T-Zones is their internet hookup, but if you go online using a WAP browser on a pre-paid t-mobile phone, there are only a few sites you can go to and you cannot access any other protocols other than http. You cannot go to google or AIM, you can only read the news, check stocks, check your balance and download new games, ringtones, shit like that. It really is a free service 100% though because it doesnt come off of your pre-paid minutes and you can use it anytime anywhere, just as long as you have a signal. The catch is that t-mobile doesnt sell any bluetooth enabled phones as a prepaid, nor do they sell any phones through their pre-paid service that allow serial port access through a serial cable. You might be able to get a serial cable for the phone, but it would only support OBEX, file exchange, syncro, etc... not actual serial access. With my older t-mobile phone, i wanted to turn it into a pre-paid to let Aimee use it because she didnt have a phone at the time. After calling t-mobile and visiting a few outlets i was told that they do not sell prepaid SIM cards and most of their pre-paid phones have a SIM that is not removeable. I thought i was screwed, until i turned to eBay. I bought a pre-paid SIM and a $50 airtime card for only $23. I popped the SIM in the Sony Ericsson T610 that I have, and it worked for calles right away, but i coudlnt use it as a modem from my computer. it always hung at the authentication screen. I figured that t-zones probably runs on a proxy server or has certain protocols blocked or something since this is a prepaid account. After several hours of tinkering in the phones advanced settings, (involving editing CIDs, VPNs, voicestreams gateways, etc) I was able to get it to work. I was able to get online and browse the web and use all internet apps/services from my laptop. the speeds are faster than 56k, but it depends on how strong of a signal that you have. After being online for an hour, i disconnected it, checked my balance, and it was the same as it was before i started using it. As in, no charge. The best part about it is that your phone only gets "disconencted" if you leave a $0 balance on your account for more than 30 days. You can buy airtime for the phone as low as $10, and those minutes are good for 60 days. So in theory, if you use the phone for internet access only, it would only really COST you $10 every two months. Thats a sweet price to pay for service like this. It completely rocks. If anyone is interested in setting this up, you could get all the hardware you would ever need (bluetooth usb adaptor, phone, SIM card) all on eBay for probably less than $75. If anyone wants help with this let me know. It is awesome knowing that i have unlimited wireless internet access anywhere i am and it wont tie up my primary cell phone so i can still receive phone calls. The only way that this would ever change is if they take away the free tzones from everyone, which they will NOT do as they are new to the US market and are trying to convert people to their service, OR if they find out how much data you are using and cut your line off. In that case, you would just buy a new SIM off eBay and to them, you are a new customer with a new phone. This will work on Mac, Windows, and *nix. Fucking awesome. and with that, i can now say that my life is complete.

I agree, but you know how the old school way of writing phreak reports and exploits was to include some nice techie bull shit kinda talk to scare away the newbies. Unless someone tries and is successfull, it should be passed off as BS.

I dont feel like reading this whole fucking article, but I get free internet/aim on my PDA phone. I use a kyocera through verizon. I pay for a 20 minute card every 3 monthes and can always get online. A couple friends of mine have tried this and bought their own and it works also.

Using your cellphone for internet (as a modem) is so slow, it hurts. Now the internet option on cellphones in some companies are free, like if you have an account in verizon, you can use your mobile to get online with no cost, assuming you are using after 9 or on the weekend. I mean internet acces for your pc. I dunno about Tmobile, Sprint or any other, there are companies that charge for this service. I cant remember where I read this (the access numbers and the login), but i know cause I moved and didnt have cable nor dls, so I didnt have an option other than to get a cable for my phone and hook it up to my computer and set it up like a modem, with free internet access. It used airtime only. So its free after 9. Now if you are talking about wap access T-mobile doesnt offer you that deal anymore, they've used to. It was kinda unfair, you get a prepaid, and unlimited wap, and if you have a plan you have to pay 9.99, but that was a couple of months ago. Now they dont have it, and you have mad people complaining about this, no more wap. I used to get free wap on a verizon t720. Now most phones are locked, an the option to change the wap server is not there. mofos. Maybe your friend just set up his phone to a service he had already. Read this for more info on internet access
