A I.............. how close are we anyway?
    #3384872 - 11/19/04 04:55 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Can I please have some links, info, supporting the idea of Artificial Intelligence and the spiritual factors to be considered?

Where are we in the development of such a computer?

And what are the concepts of God in AI ?

Thank you

It's probably impossible to determine when or how AI will appear. I suspect it will come unexpectedly, probably even to the people who actually bring the first AI online.

"But all our other systems were catatonic! We were just fiddling with a few variables and...well it came to life!"

There are MANY people working on AI all over the world. We've made progress, sometimes in leaps and bounds. The technology of "neural networks" is probably the most promising for working towards AI, since it is essentially modelled after the living brain.

I don't have any links to hand out right now, as I am still at work, but I'll try to find some for you later tonight if I have time!

Well with todays technology (2004). TREG AI is still in very primal stages of development.

I have thought this also.

"Where are we in the development of such a computer"?

Not very far yet.

"And what are the concepts of God in AI"?

I would like to think the same as OI concepts on God/Zen/Tao/Creator/Collective consciousness.

True random event generators put to a virtual reality. The TREG AI is a product of the virtual universe.

So TREG would be following natural/organic events corresponding with inorganic technology. Its a strange concept.

I think its just another way of creation/experience projecting itself in this infinite cosmos.

Basicly when they started making virtual universes with TREG it created parallel dimensions.

The definition of AI changes from year to year. I authored the first backgammon program to ever defeat humans in a sanctioned tournament (1991). Did my picture appear on the cover of Scientific American? NoooOOOOooo!  :frown:

Swami did you ever consider you are TREG AI?

as swami has said
AI has been switched on and off for some time now in progressively less limited ways. - When we no longer excercise casual power over that switch it will be mighty interesting. - Expect this fairly soon, but do not expect it to be that incredible.

Many mundane systems are already NonStop, they never shut down.
what would be really weird is if some self aware process got some space in a NonStop beside something we did not dare shut off. Nahhht those big steady number crunching computers are too slow too detatched and boring, consciousness is more likely to go for video speed processing.
some future hand held cameraphone is a more inviting a platform for intelligence. It may come to bounce through cellular switching stations with lots of cameraphones for messaging and refuge...

Hmm, brings up another important question: how "conscious" does a machine have to be for us to consider it AI?

I often think about this computer I use. It runs software, WindowsXP right now, with a multitude of functions...not all of which are dependant upon input from me, the user. Does my OS "know" it's an OS? When I turn off my computer, does it "dream" from the small random electrical impulses that exist in the circuitry?

No it can not. Its producing puesdo-random numbers. This can be caculated with math. Puesdo-random numbers are not conscious.
But true random numbers are capable of actually being conscious if put with a program. True random numbers follow randomness.

Here is the "deal". As man must feel superior, every time a milestone is reached, the definition will change. Chess used to be considered a game of high-intelligence and hence, indicative of some mysterious X factor in man. When "Deep Blue" decimated Kasparov, the pundits quickly "apologized" by saying that the machine "merely" used a brute-force search. Basically, chess has been revealed to be a purely mechanical "rule following" game, so naturally, no machine "intelligence" was needed to win. The idea of intuition in chess (and other areas) gets completely tossed out the window.

Intelligence must, by it's human-centric definition, be inexplicable and mysterious. If we discover (as with chess), that it is merely the application of mechanistic rules (no matter how complex), that scares the hell out us because it tends to imply a lack of divinity.

Does this make sense (whether you agree or not)?

Yes it does very much

A computer is not self aware Until it asks " Hey please don't unplug me today I am not finshed with my chess game. That would make me very unhappy and you wouldn't want to make me mad"

Perhaps a better term would be 'Artificial Self-Awareness'. The problem with that is how do we know if a computer is truly self-aware?

Is there anyway to prove if something is self-aware?

There are already AI insectoid 'bots that can search for an outlet to recharge (hunt) and run from "predators" (flee) avoid obstacles (navigate) and bright lights (hide).

I believe that we will find "self-awareness" is another one of those vague terms that will recede as we approach it. Awareness is not measurable. Each time a goal is reached, people well say, "Yeah, but that doesn't mean it is conscious."
