http://xdesktopwaves.sourceforge.net/
xdesktopwaves is a cellular automata setting the background of your X Windows desktop under water. Windows and mouse are like ships on the sea. Each movement of these ends up in moving water waves. You can even have rain and/or storm stirring up the water
Waves by moving the mouse pointer across the background.
Waves by moving a client window.
Fishes (xfishtank -d), turtles (xpenguins -t Turtles) and desktop icons are under water. Waves come from the storm feature.
xdesktopwaves running in a normal window, with the rain feature enabled.

Nice. Is that hardware-accelerated? Does it eat up a ton of cpu power? Gentoo only has it for ppc architecture so far, I'll try it when I can, I guess.

I don't think it's hardware accelerated...

Author Said: This may result in very dynamic wave effects - try to pile up a big wave by moving a window slowly. But: unfortunately some window managers seem to be very CPU-intensive while moving a window opaque. In that case xdesktopwaves does not perform very smooth.
I imagine it's something to be turned on when nothing else needs to be done or if you aren't multitasking.

That is fucking super hot, however, that seems like it would use up loads of cpu. awesome idea though. Definately gonna try it when I get my new laptop soon and install gentoo on it and my desktop.

Heh, just what I was thinking. Looks kinda cool though. I wonder if xsnow would have any effect on it.

I tried it last night and it seems not to use true transparency, it just uses every other horizontal line. Then again I use Enlightenment, which they claim is the WM it works least well with.
