They don't have much flavor to them at all and they are small. Somebody could easilly gobble down a small handful thinking they were active shrooms.

LOL DH. Nobody deserves the deadly ballerina. She strikes with grace and limberness. Really, they look more like cyans right now than ever.. but you would have to be in a stupor to mistake the orange rubberized stems and the bright gallerina cap as cyans. I'm a newbie who doesn't even slow his stroll when gallerinas approach. :mad2:  I dislike them because they infest like psathrellias but are not as pretty as stropheria.   To the noob, there are about ten species of shroom (total guess) which take hold in our mulch. They can be indicators for the hunter to return to a spot if the cyans have been picked and are between flushes. Here's to the smart hunting practices mentioned above.

Galerina autumnalis (Almost identical to Galerina marginata)

Actually, Galerina marginata *is* the correct name and G. autumnalis is only a synonym, along with G. oregonensis, G. unicolor, and G. venenata. This was determined in a DNA study in 2001 (Gulden, Dunham, Stockman. 2001. Mycological Research 105:432-440; DNA trees), so your books are unlikely to reflect the research.

I think that deathcapcubensis makes a good point overall. If you're going to pick and eat wild mushrooms you should be familiar with all of the local deadly species. Picking some, taking them home, and studying them are excellent ways to become familiar with them. Once you are familiar with them it becomes relatively easy to ensure that nothing you intend to eat are one of the deadly species.

Happy mushrooming!
