Another noob question...
    #3383929 - 11/19/04 01:33 PM (12 years, 23 days ago)

My friend and I went looking around in our local hardware store for supplies, and we have found most of what we need.

We couldn't find geo-lite or perlite, but we did find some organic stuff (sorry don't remember name of it) so we decided to read what was in it. It says it is made up of all organic material (ie dead leaves and such) and it says that it will keep moisture in and humidity. Will this work instead of geo-lite or perlite? I am assuming the geo-lite is to keep in moisture and humidity, correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks in advance for you help.

what is it made of?

I don't know if it will work, it sounds like a kind of compost or the like designed to help with plant moisture control.

Perlite is suprisingly easy to find. Garden centers, nurseries, Wal*mart all have it.

Do you have a Lowes' hardware store in your area? That's where I found my perlite. It was right beside the vermiculite. Same brand name as the verm even. If that's not an option you should be able to order some online. Just some suggestions. As for your question, the answer is yes, perlite/geolite is used to help retain moisture in the fruiting chamber. Perlite is great for beginners because it's low maintainance. It's hard to go wrong when using the stuff. Hope this helps.

Yeah, that's what I thought aswell, but my friend thought it would work, so I figured I'd ask. This is our first time, so I think I'll go to Wal-Mart or Home Depot and get some perlite instead of trying something new that hasnt been tried and tested.

Thanks guys.

just be careful because perlite is MESSY. if one of your cakes accidentally falls into the perlite, you're going to have a hell of a time cleaning it off after the flush (i wouldn't try until it finished). It was at the base of some mushrooms and was a pain in the ass.

That's the best way to go. Straying from the methods of the TEK as little as possible on your first grow is always best. Think of this first time as practice and remember to take things slow when in doubt. GL and happy shrooming

dont use that shit, if its organic, its some type of compost which can/will introduce contams into your system. It sounds as if its some top of top layer to put on plants and such to keep moisture inside the dirt rather than evaporating. What you want is perlite/geolite which is tiny rock like particles with holes in them. These are used to wick water into the atmosphere.

Try to find lavarock, it is in petshops and gardencenters, and has the same function as geolite and perlite mind me...
Ehhh at least the Godfather of PMP says that, his Highness Magash..

I'd get lavarock over perlite anyday. That shit is messy as hell. I've got a mix of geolite and lavarock. I didn't have enough geolite to fill my tub so i got a bag of lavarock from home depot to throw in the mix. It works great.

Perlite is a huge pain in the ass. You add water to it, and it starts to float around and you can't get a nice even table. I'd recomend sand, lavarock and hydroton/geolite long before i'd use perlite.

just stick to the tec...experiment later.
Fishtank rocks are usually covered in colored epoxy paint..they don't hold water at all you might as well use marbles.
You need surface area to help the water evaporate
